James ‘Jim’ Kannel
COCHRANE, Wis. — James “Jim” Kannel, 84, of Cochrane died Saturday, Aug. 9, 2008.

James was born Oct. 17, 1923, in Plum City, Wis., a son of the late John and Marie (Dettling) Kannel.

On Jan. 23,1947, James was united in marriage to Frances Probst at St. Lawrence Catholic Church of Alma. Frances preceded James in death on Jan. 1, 2008.

Jim was an excellent athlete, particularly in the sports of basketball and baseball. In his later years, Jim became an avid golfer. He was a lifelong Braves, Brewers and Packers fan. He enjoyed caring for flowers and a vegetable garden for many years.

James was a veteran of World War II and a member of the Cochrane/Buffalo City Lions and the Cochrane VFW, Post 10406. Jim worked at La Crosse Milling Co. and then was the manager of the Cochrane Cooperative Telephone Co. for 35 years.

James was a devoted father, husband and grandfather, who viewed life with a simple, positive attitude.

James will be sadly missed by his only son, John (Terri) Kannel of Eau Claire; three grandchildren, Luke, Ann Marie and Christa; brother, Dale of Spring Valley, Wis.; two sisters, Geraldine of Elmwood and Kathleen of Inver Grove Heights; along with several nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Richard; and his loving wife, Frances.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, Aug. 15, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Lawrence Catholic Church, with Father Rick Roberts as celebrant. Burial, with full military honors provided by VFW Post 10406 of Cochrane, will follow at Buffalo City Cemetery.

A time of visitation and support will be held Thursday, Aug. 14, from 4 until 7 p.m. at Talbot Family Funeral Home, Cochrane Chapel, and again on Friday one hour prior to the mass at the church. Memories and condolences may be sent online to Jim’s family at www.talbot-poeschel.com.

Janet Catherine Brown Sill

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Janet Catherine Brown Sill, 93, of Grand Rapids, formerly of Winona, went to be with her Lord on Sunday, Aug. 10, 2008.

She is survived by her daughter, Sharon (Skip) Baxter; two grandchildren, Jeffrey M. Baxter and Susan Baxter (Daniel) VanSkiver; and five great-grandchildren, Caleb and Ava Baxter, Trevor, Jonah and Eli VanSkiver. Janet was preceded in death by her parents, William P. and Eva Brown; and her brother, William E. Brown.

Janet was an educator of English at Winona State University, Winona, and she was the university’s first Affirmative Action Officer. She was a member of United Methodist Church in Winona. She was an avid golfer and bridge player. Janet will be greatly missed by her loving family.

Her family would like to thank the staff of Faith Hospice for their tender care. Memorial contributions may be sent to Leukemia/Lymphoma Society of Western Michigan (in honor of her great-grandson, Trevor) and Faith Hospice of Holland Home.

Edna Caroline Brommer

DURAND, Wis. — Edna Caroline Brommer, 93, of Durand died Monday, Aug. 11, 2008, at Oakview Care Center in Durand.

She was born March 1, 1915, in Center Creek, Nelson Township, Buffalo County, daughter of Bernard and Susanna Peterson Hermundson. Edna attended Cascade School and graduated from Nelson High School in 1932.

On Aug. 26, 1942, Edna married Theodore Brommer in Wabasha, Minn. They lived all their married life in Durand.

Edna worked for the Durand Canning Co. for several summers. She liked sewing, canning, baking and gardening. Edna also enjoyed working crossword puzzles and traveling on the “Cousin/Aunt“ trip every summer.

Edna was confirmed June 16, 1929, at Lyster Lutheran Church. She was a very active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Ladies Aid and Circle.

Edna is survived by daughters Susan (Donald) McNaughton of Watertown, Wis., Mary (John) Candell of Cave Creek, Ariz., and Jane (Lynn) Krueger of Golden Valley, Minn.; son, Darrell (Sadie) Brommer of Bloomington, Ill.; grandchildren, Jeff Brommer, Jay McNaughton, Jill McNaughton, Lesley Remboldt, Allison Beranek, and Mitchell Hagen; great-grandchildren, Lauren Brommer, Samuel and Julia McNaughton, Rachel and Andrew Remboldt, Ellen and Sara Osthelder and Ian Beranek; sister, Thelma Gilmore of Golden Valley, Minn.; brother, Walter (Delores) Hermundson of Durand; sister-in-law, Regina Brommer of Urne, Wis.; and many nieces and nephews.

Edna was preceded in death by her parents, Bernard and Susanna Peterson Hermundson; her husband, Theodore Brommer; brothers, Paul, Irvin, Everett and Sidney Hermundson; sisters, Mildred Isham, Clara Owen, Helen Suhr, Ruth Hermundson and Evelyn Johnson.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Durand. Pastor Daniel Pfaffe will officiate. Burial will be in Lyster Cemetery, rural Nelson.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Goodrich Funeral Home in Durand and one hour prior to services at the church on Friday.

Thomas Watson

WABASHA, Minn. — Thomas L. Watson, 64, of rural Wabasha, died Monday, Aug. 11, 2008, at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center, Wabasha.

His body has been cremated. A private service will be held.

The Abbott Funeral Home of Wabasha is in charge of arrangements.

GALESVILLE, Wis. — Patricia Meyer, 64, of Galesville died Monday, Aug. 11, 2008, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse, Wis.

Arrangements are pending with Watkowski-Mulyck Funeral Home, Winona.

Howard R. Miller

Howard R. Miller, 83, of Downsville, formerly of Durand, died Aug. 11, 2008, at Oakview Care Center in Durand.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Faith Lutheran Church, Durand. Burial in Forrest Hill Cemetery, Durand.

Friends may call from noon until the time of services at the church on Thursday.

ST. CHARLES, Minn. — Judy McCormick, 58, died Monday, Aug. 11, 2008, in Dover, Minn.

Mary C. “Connie” Stiever, 82, of Winona died Monday, Aug. 11, 2008, at Lake Winona Manor.

A funeral service with be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Tranquility Chapel at Lake Winona Manor. Burial at St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until the time of the service Friday at Tranquility Chapel.

ARCADIA, Wis. — Elizabeth “Betty” Seiler, 84, of Arcadia, died Monday, Aug. 11, 2008, at Grandview Care Center, Blair, Wis.

GILMANTON, Wis. — Warren C. Britton, 64, of Gilmanton passed away Monday, Aug. 11, 2008, at his home in Gilmanton, surrounded by his family and friends.

Memorial services will be held at 7 p.m. Friday at Kjentvet- Smith Funeral Home in Mondovi. Burial will be at a later date at the Gilmanton Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday at the Kjentvet-Smith Funeral Home in Mondovi.
