Police were dispatched to the house in the 850 block of West Fifth St. at 2:49 a.m., but the suspects had fled the scene. Officers searched the surrounding area and could not locate the men.
According to the police report:
A crowd of about six people inside heard knocks at the front door, and the suspects entered uninvited, swinging golf clubs and demanding to speak with one of the people who lived there. They repeatedly called for the person while breaking glass jars and other items with their clubs.
They did not find who they were looking for and struck one person in the arm and another person in the head with the clubs. Neither person needed medical attention.
Before leaving the house, the masked men stole about $40 from a billfold and another $210 lying on a desk. They were gone in less than five minutes.
One of the suspects was described as a white male about six feet tall, who was “very stocky” and weighed more than 200 pounds.
The other suspect was also a white male, about 5 feet, 7 inches in height, weighing about 180 pounds. Both were wearing black, long-sleeved shirts, black ski masks, black bandannas and black stocking-style caps. Each carried a single golf club.
If found, they could face charges of burglary, assault with a dangerous weapon and theft.
Winona Police Deputy Chief Paul Bostrack stressed that the incident was not random. The suspects went to that house looking for someone specific and were unsuccessful, he said.
The case is under investigation.
