Prep practices begin Monday

Winona Daily News

Fall sports practices in Minnesota begin Monday, meaning games and tournaments are right around the corner.
In fact, Cotter High School’s girls tennis team will be the first city team to compete, when it hosts a four-team tournament

Aug. 20.

Joining the Ramblers will be Cretin-Derham Hall, Rochester John Marshall and South St. Paul with matches set for 10 a.m., noon and 2 p.m.

The following day three Winona Senior High School teams kick off their seasons. The boys soccer team hosts La Crescent at 7 p.m., while the girls swimming and tennis teams both compete at Mankato West.

Football games begin

Aug. 29, and the Winhawks open the season at home against Maple River. WSHS snapped its 37-game losing streak last season with a

33-6 victory at Maple River.

Cotter’s football team plays its first two games on the road, including the opener at La Crescent. The Ramblers’ first home game is Sept. 12 against Pine Island.

A look at other fall sports teams in the city and when each team opens its season:

  • WSHS girls soccer plays Aug. 23 at La Crescent.

  • Cotter girls soccer plays at the DeLaSalle tournament Aug. 22-23.

  • Cotter’s boys soccer team opens its season Aug. 26 at home against Stewartville.

  • WSHS’s volleyball team plays its first game Aug. 26 at Mankato West.

  • Cotter’s volleyball team plays at Rushford-Peterson on Aug. 28 in its season opener.

  • Both the WSHS and Cotter boys and girls cross country teams compete in their first meet Aug. 28.

The Winhawks are at the Park Center Invitational, while Cotter runs at the Stewartville Invitational.
