When it came to the 26-car feature event, the USMTS pros had nothing on local Brad Waits.
The Zumbrota, Minn., native led start to finish in the feature event. It was his second win in as many nights against the touring series.
“We’ve got this place figured out pretty good for some strange reason,” Waits said.
Coming in second was USMTS driver Zack VanderBeek, while Winona’s Bob Timm finished fourth behind another USMTS driver, Jon Tesch.
“They say he’s just about unbeatable out here,” VanderBeek said of Waits’ domination at the Tri-Oval.
In nine weeks of Modified features, Waits has won eight of them. He wrecked the only time he didn’t win.
When it comes to the Tri-Oval, Waits may have actually had a bigger advantage over the USMTS drivers, who run all the same equipment, but race a lot more often — four or five times a week.
“This is a fun track, but it’s a lot different,” said VanderBeek, who is third in the USMTS points standings. “We’re used to four corners. Here, you’re always turning.”
The 35-lap feature started out slow with a caution on the first and third laps. After that, however, there weren’t many hitches.
Because of that, Waits was able to get around to lap a lot of the pack, which was his biggest problem. Once he got behind that traffic, VanderBeek was able to close the gap a bit, but it was never close.
Eighteen of the 26 cars finished the race.
In the Midwest Modifieds feature, 16-year-old Houston, Minn., native Kyle Jumbeck won his 10th consecutive feature. The only race he didn’t win was Week 1, where Travis Krause took the checkered flag.
Alma, Wis., native Danny Hanson took the Street Stocks feature, while Ashley Wolfe of La Crosse, Wis., won the Hornets feature.
