Gabriel David Bebout could be sentenced to up to 10 years in prison and charged a $20,000 fine if
convicted.
According to the criminal complaint, Goodview police officers were dispatched Feb. 6 to a house in the 1600 block of 48th Avenue on a report of a burglary. The homeowners said they left between 3:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. to go to church, and when they returned around 8 p.m., they noticed cold air coming from the basement. They discovered a bathroom window shattered and noticed they were missing a bottle containing between 150 and 200 pills of Percocet, a narcotic pain reliever.
They told the responding officer they suspected their son, Bebout, had taken the pills because he has “a drug problem” and had stolen from them before, the complaint states.
The officer discovered a single set of footprints in the snow that tracked from the street, around the house and to the broken window. While the officer was speaking with the homeowners, Bebout called and spoke with one of them for a short time.
According to the complaint, he told the homeowner he threw a retaining wall block through the window and stole his parents’ pills because he “needed money.” Bebout said he took three of the pills because his leg was cut from the window and made “suicidal comments” over the phone.
Police were unable to locate Bebout, and he has been summoned to appear in Winona County District Court on Aug. 7.
