That can be a lot of tennis, let alone activity for anyone. However, for Katelyn Glenna, it’s all worth it.
“It’s a lot of tennis,” she said. “There’s not a ton of time to do stuff, but I do get to hang out with my friends on weekends.”
Glenna’s hard work paid off July 1 when she took over the No. 1 ranking of the girls 16-under challenger competition in the Northern League with 432 points. The Northern League consists of girls from Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota and northwestern Wisconsin.
This isn’t the first time the 15-year-old Glenna has been ranked No. 1. Last year, she was the top-ranked girl in the 14-under challenger competition.
Glenna’s ranking is based on points accumulated during tournaments in the region, including Eden Prairie, Apple Valley and Owatonna.
“This year it’s more satisfying than last year because I’m only 15 and I accomplished it quicker,” said Glenna, who has a 24-13 record.
“Last year, I was pretty happy accomplishing (No. 1) but it took me a little longer than I wanted because I just started doing tournaments.”
Glenna said she didn’t start playing tennis tournaments until she was 13, while players she knew started long before she did. When she started playing in tournaments, she struggled at first but it didn’t keep her down.
“I got beat a lot,” she said. “I was confident I would improve because all the other girls did.
“It took me a while to get used to competing, but once I got some experience, I started to win a little more.”
In the fall, Glenna will be starting her sophomore year at WSHS. Even though she is only 15 and isn’t halfway through high school, she is looking to use her tennis skills to achieve some goals.
“I hope to get a lot of scholarship offers,” Glenna said. “I’d like to play as long as I can because I like playing tennis a lot.
“There are some days when it gets boring, but most days it’s a lot of fun.”
