Mayor faces three challengers

.
Voters, prepare for primaries.

The filing period for state and local offices ended with a flourish Tuesday evening, as a cadre of challengers likely will trigger primaries in the cities of Winona and Stockton, and in Winona, Houston and Fillmore counties.
Winona Mayor Jerry Miller is slated to seek his fourth consecutive term, running against three challengers including Haakon Nelson, John Skalitzky and Clarence Russell, a local activist who crusaded to save the Wilkie steamboat replica.

Winona councilwoman Debbie White and Winona County commissioner David Stoltman also are being challenged in their re-election bids. Jim Kerkenbush, a retired teacher and truck driver, will face White, while city of Winona inspector Greg Olson will challenge Stoltman.

None of the Winona city or county challengers have held or sought elected office.

In Houston and Fillmore counties — and in small cities such as Goodview and Stockton — local races also brought forth a slew of challengers, especially for open seats.

Though Tuesday marked the deadline to file for office, candidates have until Thursday afternoon to withdraw from a race.

Primary elections are Sept. 9; the general election is Nov. 4.

Most small cities, including St. Charles, Rollingstone and Lewiston, also will have local races in November. But since they don’t hold primaries, their filing period doesn’t begin until Aug. 26.

" Is that another racist shot Hot Rod?!?!?! Just because I'm Mexican I'm suppose to be fast like Speedy Gonzales?!?!?! How about this.... Not so "can't dance or jump" Otis, what you may not know is xfs-123 and cewoodford are siamese twins; which gives us 3 times the crazy for the price of 2. Plus I've been over this whole "united" thing on the last board. If elected we will divide this city like it's never dreamed of being divided before!!!!!!! "

" Ha! I just want to see every incumbent out so we can get in people with different ideas, by that I mean ANY ideas!!!

But with the way Winona resists change, I doubt anything will really happen and status quo will once again be triumphant.

Between the city and the county, we have far too many useless and clueless politicians along with their appointees doing their bidding. "

" Not so fast El Uno. You also have to contend with the Hot Rod/Rawhide ticket. We're uniters, not dividers. "
