Of the 92 racers that showed up for the American Bicycle Association (ABA) BMX race at the Cove, Callaway, who lives in Onalaska, Wis., probably pedaled the hardest, and stole the show, too.
Callaway’s feet were a blur peddling his Micro Mini BMX racer. He flew down the hills on the eight-lane course and battled up them.
It may have taken him a little longer than anyone else to finish, but he finished with the crowd cheering him on down the final straightaway.
Kids from Callaway’s age to 54-year-old Bill Dickerson participated in Sunday’s race.
This was a day after Toad’s Cove held a charity race to fight Leukemia and raised over $1,500 with 48 racers participating.
Andy Todd’s BMX track is relatively new, perched behind the BP Gas Station.
“I’m affiliated with a lot of tracks,” Dickerson said. “This track is perfect for what Andy is doing. It’s a great beginner and intermediate track.”
There weren’t any complaints Sunday. Some bumps and bruises from a few spills, but just about every racer peddled across that finish line.
“The track is nice,” said Markesan, Wis., native Desiree Roeder, 13, who beat two boys in her main event race. “The starting gate is the best with the big hill. The only tough part was rain put some rivets (bumps) in the corners.”
Saturday’s charity race was delayed two hours, as Todd and volunteers worked to get the track race ready. Sunday’s special ABA race went off without a hitch.
“I’ve been racing since November,” said Rebecca Dailey, 9, of Altura, Minn. She also noted she races the indoor course in the winter, but calls Toad’s Cove her home track. “It is (my home track). I like it a lot. I’m used to it.”
Normally, Toad’s Cove holds the races every Saturday with signup taking place from 10:30 a.m. to noon. Thursday’s are practices from 5-8 p.m.
People of all ages are welcome to come test out the track. For more information, call 608-539-COVE or email toadscovecafe@centurytel.net.
