Summer baseball roundup: Buddies win fifth straight game

The Winona Buddies VFW baseball team won its fifth consecutive game Wednesday.

Lance Jensen went 3-for-3 with a double and two RBIs, Jared Gilbertson and Tommy Mullen combined for a two-hitter and 10 strikeouts and the Buddies used an eight-run fourth to beat Red Wing 12-3 at Cotter Field.
Red Wing went up 3-0 through two innings before the Buddies (13-4, 6-4) rallied for 12 runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings combined, including eight in the fourth.

“We started off slow, which is kind of typical of our season,” Buddies coach Matt O’Brien said. “But just when I thought we were headed for a no-show game, we came to life.”

Gilbertson picked up the win with five strikeouts in four innings. Mullen had five strikeouts in three innings in relief.

Winona’s Logan Hemker went 2-for-3.

American Legion

La Crescent 17, Caledonia 0

CALEDONIA, Minn. — La Crescent was up 15-0 when starter Tim Verthein was pulled with a no-hitter in the fourth.

Brandon Verthein and Andrew Helland had two hits apiece for La Crescent. Pat Falk had a double and two RBIs.

Caledonia finished with one hit and 10 errors.
