On Saturday, the nine-person committee is throwing its first event with Dance for Art from 7 to 11 p.m. at the Winona Senior Friendship Center. The event features a silent auction to benefit future art projects and a dance featuring music from all over the world.
“It’s a really interesting mix so anybody can find something to dance to,” said committee member and Winona artist Bernadette Mahfood.
The auction will feature the work of local artists as well as gift certificates for dance and piano lessons and certificates for area businesses.
Money raised will help fund Family Art Day Extravaganza, set for Sept. 14 at Lake Park. The event ties in with the Paddle of Life Regatta on Sept. 13 and will feature about 30 Winona artists demonstrating their talents. There will be demonstrations on drawing, painting, pottery and tapestry weaving, and instructive seminars on how to makes baskets, instruments, masks, paper, jewelry and more. Winona Poet Laureate Jim Armstrong will also give a session on how to write poetry.
“We’re trying to cover all the arts,” Mahfood said. “Art is really life enhancing.”
Those interested in the blue herons, which were
auctioned off last October, can visit their homes in a few weeks when the city puts together maps of the heron locations. All but two of the birds can be seen by the
public.
“It was exciting to see how many people had their pictures taken with them,” Mahfood said. “Kids in their prom outfits came to see them. It was huge.”
The committee will work to bring more arts events to Winona, Mahfood said
“We want the community to become as involved in art as possible,” she said.
