Heath, a former standout at Winona Senior High School who now runs at Stanford, led the first three laps before falling to the back of the pack. He finished with a time of 3 minutes, 43.90 seconds.
Alan Webb, the American record holder in the mile, won the heat in 3:41.27, the fastest time in the quarterfinal heats.
Heath’s time was good for 22nd among the 30 runners, moving him into today’s semifinals. The top six runners from each heat, as well as the next six best times advanced.
The semifinals are set to begin around 10:05 p.m. today and will be televised by the USA Network. The final is scheduled for 7:50 p.m. Sunday on NBC.
