This new legislation will enable the executive branch to spy on Americans without warrant from the FISA court. This legislation also will grant immunity to telecommunications companies that have been assisting the executive branch in such spying for years, in a breach of existing law and the Fourth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.
Americans of all political parties and opinions should be concerned about this legislation. At issue is the rule of law, and whether our Constitution is merely a quaint museum piece, not to be taken seriously. In our tradition, liberty is seen as something to be guarded by the people of the nation, not to be entrusted to politicians and entrenched power. I urge everyone to visit Sen. Chris Dodd’s Web site (dodd.senate.gov) and read or watch his June 24 speech on this subject.
This is a very grave subject, which has received little media coverage. The American people need to know what’s going on in Washington, D.C. Are we as a people so frightened by the current world situation that we would allow the government to sell our treasured national heritage down the river?
