Wilferd Heinrich Schaub
Wilferd Heinrich Schaub
Sept. 10, 1914 — June 25, 2008
ALMA, Wis. — Wilferd H. Schaub, 93, of Alma died Wednesday, June 25, 2008, at St. Michael’s Lutheran Home in Fountain City. He will be greatly missed by his loving family.
He was born Sept. 10, 1914, on the family farm, Lincoln Township, Buffalo County, Wis., to the late William Wilhelm and Sarah (Haigh) Schaub, the youngest of eight children.
On June 15, 1943, he married Catherine Molitor at the parsonage of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Arcadia. Wilferd and Catherine owned and operated a farm near Praag. In their retirement years, they continued to live on the farm, which is now operated by Wallace Schaub. Catherine preceded Wilferd in death Dec. 31, 1998.
Wilferd, one of the leading farmers of Lincoln Township and proprietor of Valley View Farm, retired in 1987. He designed and constructed many of the farm buildings, including the garage, corncrib, and pig barn. He also used his skills learned on the farm to perform numerous maintenance requirements at the Praag School, including the design and construction of playground equipment. Besides his farming duties, Wilferd was treasurer of the local school district for 14 years. Wilferd and his brother Melvin operated the dairy farm as a partnership from 1942 to 1975. In 1975, Wilferd became sole proprietor of the farm. Son Wallace assumed operation of the farm in 1987.
Wilferd was especially proud of his farm, which was homesteaded by his grandfather in 1853. He enjoyed all the farming activities, including planting and harvesting the crops, milking the cows, raising hogs, and in his later years, tending to his garden. In all his days of farming, he only took a three-day vacation every August to go fishing in northern Wisconsin. His sons have many fond memories of those fishing trips. He was kind to his farm animals and was especially fond of his many dogs. His current dog, Buckles, will sadly miss him.
Wilferd was a lifelong member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Cream, Wis. He took great pride in the fact that the original church located at the Zion Cemetery contained a stained glass window dedicated by the Schaub family.
He encouraged and supported his five sons in attaining civil engineering degrees from the University of Wisconsin (Platteville and Madison).
Wilferd will be sorely missed by his five sons, David (Joni) of Scottsdale, Ariz., Lyle (Paula) of Normal, Ill., Leonard (Susan) of Black Earth, Wis., and Wallace of Alma, Dale (Annette) of Scottsdale; seven grandchildren, Steven (Bernadette) Schaub of Scottsdale, Brian (Celestine) Schaub of Rio, Wis., Jacquelyn (Schaub) Mathison of Phoenix, Ariz., Kevin Schaub (fiancée Laura Giese) of Dickeyville, Wis., Christopher Schaub of Beloit, Wis., Jeremy Schaub of Scottsdale and Kegan Schaub of Scottsdale; and five great-grandchildren, Nicole Schaub of Scottsdale, David Schaub of Scottsdale, Alyssa Schaub of Rio, Derek Schaub of Rio and Eric Mathison of Scottsdale.
Besides his parents and wife, Catherine; four brothers, Adlai, Roswell, Clarence and Melvin; and three sisters, Wilma Knopse, Linda Reglin and infant sister Mabel, preceded Wilferd in death.
A funeral service will be Monday, June 30, at 11 a.m. at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Elroy V. Conradt officiating. Interment will be at Alma Memorial Cemetery after the services.
Visitation will be Sunday, June 29, from 5 until 7 p.m. at Talbot Family Funeral Homes, Alma, and on Monday one hour prior to the funeral service at the church.
Pallbearers are Franklin Molitor, James Schaub, Steven Schaub, Brian Schaub, Kevin Schaub and Christopher Schaub.
