The Kids Power Pedal Pull at Steamboat Days allowed children ages 4 to 17 to compete in a modified tractor pull, using a tractor with bike pedals to pull an attached weighted sled.

“It’s really interesting,” said Kerri Golombecki, first attendant in the Miss Winona Pageant. “The kids seem to really enjoy it.”
Golombecki, and Miss Winona Danielle Tamke and Spirit Award winner Whitney Peterson, presented trophies to the first-, second- and third-place winners of each age group.
Kwik Trip provided every competitor with a can of Dr. Pepper.
Repeat competitors and younger siblings put their leg muscles to work, and some had prepared.
Six-year-old Kole Koehler of Winona lifted weights beforehand to get buff, said his mother, Jennifer.
He didn’t wind up placing, but his 4-year-old sister, Emma, finished second in her age division.
Her placement guarantees her a spot in the state competition, held Sept. 6 in Hutchinson, Minn.
Brandon Cafferty, 8, of Fountain City, Wis., won first place this year and has competed in Winona and at state since 2003.
“The state competition is a lot of fun,” Cafferty’s mom, Kara, said. “It’s a good, positive sport.”
The pull was put on by Kid Power Pedal Tractor Pull, owned by Rick Scholbrock of Hanlontown, Iowa, and sponsored by Kwik Trip.
Scholbrock and his wife, Sandy, and daughters, Katie and Crystal, travel throughout Minnesota, Iowa and South Dakota, hosting pulls all summer long, sometimes as many as four a day.
Katie, 13, has won four national and international titles and 28 state titles and holds the record of winning five pulls in one day.
