Steamboat Days starts Wednesday

.
For 61 years, Steamboat Days has helped welcome summer to Winona. This year’s celebration kicks off Wednesday and continues through Sunday.

Many of the events stay the same each year. Can you imagine Steamboat Days without the grand parade or fireworks? But each year, organizers try to find something new to entertain. This year, there’s the human cannonball.
“That is definitely a highlight this year,” said Steamboat Days President Amanda Wiefenbach.

Wiefenbach is from Owatonna, Minn., and moved to Winona 20 years ago. She’s been on the Steamboat Days board for years and always looks forward to the celebration.

“The whole thing is a wonderful event,” Wiefenbach said.

Other events include

Home and Community Options’ performance of “The Wizard of Oz,” the South Shore Drill Team, softball tournament, the BK5K road race, kids’ fishing contest, city-wide garage sale, car show, U.S. Title Series Hydroplane boat races and a lot more.

As usual, there will be lots of music, with performances by The Dweebs, Three Beers ’Til Dubuque, 7 Day Weekend, the Winona Municipal Band, Hodge Podge, Tony Brown, Bob and the Beachcombers, the Bandanas, Lost Faculties and the John Paulson Jazz Trio.

There’s a lot to do and not a lot of time to do it, so check out the schedule and have some summer fun.

“It’s a great way to celebrate living in a great place,” Wiefenbach said.
