Toddler drowns at his birthday party

TOWN OF PIGEON, Wis. — Authorities have released the name of a 1-year-old boy who drowned in a family swimming pool Saturday.

The child’s parents, Scott and Lisa Schmitt, were hosting a birthday party for Nathan Schmitt and his sister, Alisha, at their house on Sjuggerud Coulee Road, according to the Trempealeau County Sheriff’s Department. Nathan was about to turn 2.

The toddler was found by his brother in an above-ground pool behind the house, the department stated. The pool was gated off and not being used for the party.

Adults called 911 and did CPR until emergency crews arrived. Nathan was taken to Tri-County Memorial Hospital in Whitehall, Wis., then flown to Lutheran Hospital in Eau Claire, Wis., and on to St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minn., where he was pronounced dead, according to the department.
