Martin took second place in the pole vault at Big Nine Conference track and field meet on Friday, and broke her own school record clearing a height of 10 feet, 9 inches.
“At the beginning of the year, the record was 9-9. She’s since broken it by a foot,” WSHS girl coach Kim Chapman said.
Martin got the height on her third attempt and it’s an important mark, because qualifying standard for the state meet is 10-8.
“The top two girls in the state in the pole vault are in our section, so Alli knows she may have to qualify by standard” WSHS girls coach Kim Chapman said.
The WSHS girls placed fourth overall with 167 points, getting two conference champions in Claire Guidinger and Chari Lehnertz. Owatonna won the meet with 292.
Guidinger got her first career Big Nine title, winning the 3,200-meter (11:32.85), while Lehnertz defended her discus title with a toss of 114 feet, 3 inches.
Lehnertz also took second in the shot put (40-3 ¼).
On the boys side, the 4 x 800 relay team of Myles Beckman, Erik Blomsness, Sam Meiner and Ethan Kastello took home a Big Nine title, winning by 11 seconds with a time of 8:13.39.
“That was the eighth fastest time in Winona High history,” said an excited Tim Gleason, the WSHS boys coach.
Also getting titles for the boys were Sam Meiner in the 800 (1:59.45) and Jon Michael-Brandt in the 3,200 (9:54.18).
“Meiner’s just a sophomore,” Gleason said. “I don’t think there were a lot of people in the conference that knew a lot about him, but they do now. He had a nice coming out party today.”
The boys took eighth out of 10 teams with 99 points. Faribault won with 254.
Athletes taking first or second in the meet were named all-conference. Third and fourth place got honorable mention and WSHS had six of those.
Erik Darbo took fourth in the 300 hurdles (41.64) for the boys, while Kayla Ewert took third in both the 1,600 (5:23.26) and 800 (2:28.12) for the girls.
Also being named honorable mention for the WSHS girls was its 4 x 800 relay team of Cherisse Wolvington, Heather Dansingburg, Claire Guidinger and Kristin Resch, who took fourth (10:03.71). The 4 x 100 relay also took fourth (53.25). It consisted of Bethany Johnson, Aixa Evenson, Alli Martin and Bailey Biggerstaff.
Kelly Conner was fourth in the discus (101-0), and Hannah Stoltman was fourth in the pole vault (9-9) for the Winhawks.
