Former Wis. veterans official faces prison time for theft

MADISON (AP) — Prosecutors will recommend up to two years in prison for a former Wisconsin veterans official who pleaded guilty to stealing from veterans organizations.

Rich Calcut pleaded guilty Monday to one count of felony theft by fraud.
The former public information officer for the Wisconsin Veterans Home in King stole $260,000 from accounts supported by veterans groups like AMVETS over eight years.

Calcut has already paid $65,000 in restitution. Defense lawyer Erik Ellingson says Calcut hopes to pay back all $260,000 before his sentencing in August. Calcut is selling his Waupaca home.

Ellingson says he will argue against prison time for his client.
