The Ramblers clinched the title Tuesday with a 13-4 win over Stewartville, getting a 3-for-3 effort from Allie Gernes.
Cotter got out to an 8-0 lead after three innings and gave up three of the four runs in the seventh.
Whitney Wisecup was 3-for-5 with an RBI and Erica Hengel went 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI for Cotter (15-4, 13-0).
The only year Cotter didn’t win the HVL title was 2006. All the Ramblers did that season was win state.
Rochester Mayo 5, WSHS 1
ROCHESTER, Minn. — Winona had its chances but couldn’t convert.
“We didn’t get the clutch hits,” WSHS coach Dave Heise said. “We left eight runners on base. We had the bases loaded in the first and couldn’t drive anyone in.”
Hannah Norman went 2-for-4 and Megan Flaningan went 1-for-3 with an RBI.
Sarah Bohllen went seven innings, struck out seven and went 2-for-2 with two doubles and an RBI for Mayo.
Baseball
Rochester Mayo 6, WSHS 5
Winona got out to a four-run lead thanks in part to Austin Rumpca’s two-run home run to left-center field, but Rochester Mayo got the bats going late, scoring six runs in the fourth and fifth innings.
“They just battled back hard,” WSHS coach Matt Smith said. “It was almost identical to the first game.”
The first time these teams met, the Winhawks lost 4-3 in nine innings.
Brandon Schmit was 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and an RBI, and Arik Jacquart was 2-for-3 for the Winhawks (4-11, 4-9).
Mitch Lund was 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and an RBI for Mayo (10-2, 9-2).
Boys golf
WSHS second out of 3
FARIBAULT, Minn. — WSHS shot 324, one shot behind first place Faribault. Ben Klein of Faribault was the medalist, shooting a 3-under-par 69.
“Overall, I was pleased with the way we played,” Winhawks coach Jon Hogenson said. “We almost beat Faribault and they had a guy shoot three-under par.”
Justin Ewert shot 78, Zach Erickson shot 81, William Leaf shot 82 and John Gaspar shot 83 for the Winhawks.
Track and field
Winona triangular
Winona got numerous personal bests and 11 first-place finishes in winning the triangular with 83 points. Rochester Century had 68 and Rochester John Marshall scored 33.
“It wasn’t too hot or too windy,” WSHS girls coach Kim Chapman said, “so the conditions were pretty good and it’s just that time in the season where all the hard work is starting to come together.”
Chari Lehnertz led the Winhawks with two first-place finishes. The senior won the discus (120 feet) and the shot put (37-½).
WSHS won three relay races including the 4x800-meter in 10:40.02. That team was composed of Cherisse Wolvington, Jessica Young, Emma Larson and Kristin Resch.
Resch also took part in the 4 x 400 relay win (4:25.85), along with Megan Hatfield, Hannah Stoltman and Kayla Ewert.
Ewert won the 1,600 (5:21.47), Hatfield won the 300 hurdles (49.97), and Young won the 3,200 (12:33.45).
Winona’s Aixa Evenson won the 100 (13.44) and teamed up with Bethany Johnson, Alli Martin and Bailey Biggerstaff to win the 4 x 100 relay (52.68). Evenson also took second in the long jump (15-7).
WSHS’s Claire Guidinger won the 800 (2:30.49) and Martin won the pole vault (9-6).
Roch. Century Triangular
ROCHESTER, Minn. — Winona finished second with 59 points, while Rochester Century won the meet (82).
“It was another rainy night and the kids handled it well,” WSHS coach Tim Gleason said. “We had a good performance and I hope these last few meets will get us ready for the championship week coming up.”
For the Winhawks, Sam Miner finished first in the 400 (52.23) and took second in the 800 (2:05.07) behind teammate Eric Blomsness won the 800 (2:05.06).
Erik Darbo won the 300 hurdles (46.62), while Lance Young won the shot put (43-10) and took second in the discus (119) for Winona, while Ben Shepardson finished third in the pole vault with a personal best 10-foot height.
