" While constrained refinery capacity due to unscheduled maintenance (accidents, storms, etc.) can cause price spikes, over the long term expansion and technology upgrades of existing facilities has been sufficient to process the available supplies. Why would the industry want to build new plants if its more economical to improve existing ones? Keep in mind that Bush, in the last State of the Union address called for reducing our national gasoline consumption by 20%. Not much of an incentive for corporate investment in building new ones.
And if refining capacity was really a bottleneck now, does it make any sense for Bush to be over begging the Saudis to increase their export of crude?

Sort of related to this is the charge that oil companies have been trying to inhibit alternative fuel initiatives. If they really wanted to, then in conjunction with OPEC, supplies could be manipulated to keep retail prices periodically low enough to make alternate fuel investments look too risky. Any opinions on why they are not doing so? "

" No one said we don't need oil, only that we have enough. I understand that oil is in everything from plastic bags (we should ban them like California) to laundry bottles. We have other options!
Watch "Who killed the electric car", it is a more thorough telling of the electric car story. The battery technology is here. I don't buy the pricing argument you raised. I saw an electric car at the Living Green Expo in St. Paul last week for $17,000.
And the electricity? 100% of mine comes from wind power. "

" really?, I did a little search on our favorite search engine to see why GM "really" stopped producing the electric vehicles. I found some interesting information. It doesn't seem like the reason for dumping the entire line of vehicles (as did all the other major manufacturers) IS because we're waiting for the technology! Batteries to store the electricity to get me from point A to somewhere more than 100miles away! A model that allows these vehicles to be priced competitively (you do understand that the electic companies are already telling you to conserve electricity right? Or we have to build more coal fired plants and/or nuclear and/or find someone willing to host wind farms (not an easy task)).

Um, we don't need oil? Think plastics. Think lubricants for machines that run the industrial markets. Think asphalt (which MN needs a lot more of at this time). Here's a site where even 4th graders can come up with a few things oils is needed for (outside of gasoline):

" El Uno, I need to point out a small flaw in your rationalization. In a free market economy (or as close as the politicians will let us get to it here in the US), an increased demand does not equate to a supply drop. Nor, does a supply drop necessarily mean a price increase. One must at least try to understand the market economy before pontificating and proclaiming to be able to quote 'I just explained supply and demand...'. For a good read see: http://www.investopedia.com/university/economics/economics3.asp "

We aren't waiting for the technology, it's already here and it's been wiped out! And we can greatly reduce our use of coal. We have all the wind we need for electricity. There are no more excuses for not being informed. "

This country has all fo the oil it will ever need, but when the evironmental lobby has a death grip on our politicians, particularly democrats, the blame can be placed right on their shoulders. This movement is a religion to its practioners, plain and simple. We have not gotten the oil we know we have, and the oil companies have not be one new refinery in almost 30 years. We have not built any nuclear plants which would greatly reduce our need for oil and coal. Wake up folks! "
