Area roundup: Melrose-Mindoro softball team capitalizes on C-FC error to win

FOUNTAIN CITY, Wis. — You know the old saying in baseball or softball: “You can’t give good teams extra outs.”

The Cochrane-Fountain City High School softball team found that out the hard way Friday in a Dairyland Conference matchup against Melrose-Mindoro.

An error in the top of the seventh inning kept the game going and allowed M-M to score two unearned runs and defeat C-FC 5-4.

Coming into the seventh, Pirates relief pitcher Nicki Dahl was cruising, not allowing a single run and striking out five. She struck out the first batter in the inning, the next reached on an error, then the next batter popped out.

The game should have been over there, but the Mustangs put together three straight hits to take the lead.

Alyssa Baumer went seven innings and struck out three and Alexis Plachecki went 2-for-4 with a triple for M-M (10-3, 10-3).
