Published - Friday, May 09, 2008 Wis. authorities look into death of Washington County inmate OSHKOSH, Wis. — A man suspected of being mentally unstable killed himself by slitting his neck while authorities were taking him to a mental hospital Thursday, deputies said. The 30-year-old Town of Erin man had been taken into protective custody about 2 a.m., the Washington County sheriff’s department said in a news release. After consulting with the county’s Acute Care Services, deputies were taking him to the Winnebago Mental Health Institute. The man slit his neck during transport, according to Winnebago County authorities. The deputies detoured to the nearby Winnebago County sheriff’s office for emergency aid, but the man was already dead. The two deputies were placed on administrative duty pending an investigation. The man’s name was not released.
