Leonore E. Rivers
July 16, 1914 — May 7, 2008

ROCHESTER, Minn. — Leonore E. Rivers, 93, of Rochester died Wednesday, May 7, 2008, at Madonna Towers, Rochester.

She was born July 16, 1914, in Rollingstone, Minn. She graduated from Holy Trinity High School and later College of St. Theresa in Winona. She also attended the University of Minnesota.

She worked at Mayo Clinic in the department of clinical chemistry and helped set up the laboratory quality control department. She retired in 1979 after 42 years at Mayo Clinic.

She was a member of St. John the Evangelical Catholic Church, a member of St. Agatha’s and St. Raphael’s Council of Catholic Women and a member of National Clinical Chemists. She was active in golf at Soldier’s Field and Eastwood Ladies’ League.

She is survived by nieces, Peg (Steve) Daly, Carolyn Kalmes, Kitty (Dave) Bruzek, Mary Rivers, Jane (John) Plonski and Ann (Leon) Ditch; nephews, Dick (Marcia) Kalmes, Steve (Bonnie) Kalmes, David (Christa) Rivers and John Rivers; 12 great- nieces and nephews; and six great-great-nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Mass will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Madonna Towers Chapel, Rochester. Interment will be in Holy Trinity Cemetery, Rollingstone.

Friends may call one hour before the service Saturday at Madonna Towers Chapel.

Family prefers memorials to Holy Trinity Church in Rollingstone or St. Raphael’s Guild.

Lucille Elizabeth Devereaux Gomez

March 4, 1912 — May 5, 2008

Lucille Elizabeth Devereaux Gomez was born March 4, 1912, in Superior, Wis. She grew up in Winona, where she graduated Cathedral High School as class salutatorian in 1930. It was in Winona where she met our dad, the love of her life. They were married Jan. 5, 1934. Lucy and “Juan” lived in many parts of the United States as well as in Panama, Costa Rica, and Mexico City over their years together. They retired to Austin in 1976. Lucy passed away Monday, May 5, 2008, in Houston, Texas. She had been living with her daughter Lynne and husband Bill during the last few years of her life.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles Patrick Devereaux and Josephine Rose Johnson

Devereaux; and sisters, Elsie Power and Mary Sieracki, as well as by her beloved husband of 51 years, John F. Gomez Sr. They had four children who survive them, Marijo Lucille Guerrero and her husband Jorge Guerrero of Austin, Texas; John F. Gomez Jr. and his wife Kathy Mikeska of San Diego, Calif.; Anne Gomez Sterrett and her husband David Sterrett of Austin; and Lynne Gomez and her husband Bill Coffey of Houston. Grandma Lucy leaves 11 surviving grand-children, John Michael Guerrero, Marijo Guerrero Lister and Maria Sterrett of Austin; Tony Guerrero of Dallas; Suzy Guerrero Vecchi and Nancy Guerrero Lambarri of Mexico City; Lucy Guerrero Kuempel and William Coffey III of Houston; John H. Gomez and Amy Gomez of San Diego, Calif.; and Steven Devereaux Gomez of Los Angeles. Grandma also had 11 great-grandchildren.

Lucy loved her life as wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was devoted to her Catholic faith and a long-time member of St. Austin Catholic Church.

The family wishes to thank Odyssey Healthcare of Houston, especially Marlene, Monica, Terri, Darlene and Trish, for their wonderful care of our mother during her illness.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Friday, May 9, at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 10, at Assumption Mausoleum Chapel. Interment will follow at Assumption Cemetery.

Milton L. Gerard

Oct. 31, 1923 — May 5, 2008

MABEL, Minn. — Milton L. Gerard, 84, of Newburg died Monday, May 5, 2008, at his home.

Milton was born Oct. 31, 1923, in Wiesel in Amherst Township, Fillmore County, Minn., to Philip and Hazel (Vickerman) Gerard. He attended the “Cigar Box” country school near Amherst. On Dec. 30, 1943, he entered the United States Navy, where he served as a fireman first class aboard the USS Highlands A.P.A. during World War II in the South Pacific, where he witnessed the sinking of the Bismark Sea, the raising of the U.S. flag on Iwo Jima and was present in Tokyo Bay when the peace treaty was signed aboard the USS Missouri. After his discharge on March 29, 1946, he returned to the Mabel area.

On June 25, 1956, he married Cora (Thompson) Newton in Harmony. They resided in Newburg, where he operated a sawmill and lumberyard. Milton grew up with an appreciation of the outdoors and was a skilled hunter, fisherman and trapper, and was concerned about conservation of natural resources.

He was a member of Newburg United Methodist Church, the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Milton is survived by his wife, Cora, of Newburg; four daughters, Ann (Tom) Emery of Caledonia, Minn., and Carol (Rodney) Thompson, Pauline Vigeland and Elaine Johnson, all of Mabel; a son, Tony (Shelly) of Canton; step-son, David Newton of Mabel; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a brother, Robert of Olympia, Wash.; and “Sam” his faithful rat terrier.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Phyllis (Norris) Sorenson; and three brothers, Richard, Eldred and Charlie.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, May 9, at Newburg United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Jeanne Martin officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery with military rites by the American Legion and VFW.

Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m today, May 8, at Mengis Funeral Home in Mabel and one hour prior to services at the church.
