Published - Thursday, May 08, 2008 PREP ROUNDUP: WSHS coaches happy with True Team performances LAKEVILLE, Minn. — Despite the final team scores, both the Winona Senior High School boys and girls track and field teams are happy with the way the Section 1AA True Team meet turned out Wednesday. On the boys side, WSHS placed sixth out of nine teams with a score of 633.5 but had three first place finishes and several seconds and thirds. Jon-Michael Brandt won the 3,200-meter dash with a time of 10 minutes, 4.20 seconds, the 1,600 relay team of Aron Welch, Matt McGowan, Ethan Kastello and Sam Miner won (3:31.30) and the 3,200 relay team of Kastello, Eric Blomsness, Myles Beckman and Miner won (8:20.38). Miner placed second (2:02.08) in the 800 and Erik Darbo placed third in both the 110 hurdles (16.25) and the 300 hurdles (43.28). “I was proud of the way we competed,” WSHS boys coach Tim Gleason said. “Whether we were competing for the top three or just personal bests, we worked hard.” On the girls side, the Winhawks finished fifth out of nine teams with a score of 591. Claire Guidinger finished first in the 3,200 (11:34.95) and Chari Lehnertz placed first in the discus with a distance of 116 feet, 1 inch. Lehnertz finished second in the shot put (38-2), Kayla Ewert finished third in the 800 (2:29.54), Megan Hatfield finished third in the 300 hurdles (50.88), and Allison Martin finished third in the pole vault and broke the school record with a vault of 10 feet. The 3,200 relay team of Guidinger, Heather Dansingburg, Kristin Resch and Ewert placed second (10:06.17). “We performed real well despite the conditions,” WSHS girls coach Kim Chapman said. “I was very proud of Aly for breaking the school pole vault record and I was proud of Claire Gidinger for the way she performed.” Baseball Three Rivers Conference Caledonia 17, Fillmore Central 3 (5) CALEDONIA, Minn. — Alex Klug hit two home runs, including a grand slam, to finish with seven RBIs for Caledonia. Bobby Augedahl was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs and Matt Mitchell went 4-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs for the Warriors, who scored seven runs in the first inning. P-E-M 8, L-A 4 PLAINVIEW, Minn. — Matt Pick went 3-for-4 with a three-run home run, Matthan Kohn was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and Jason Hoffman struck out five in seven innings to lead Plainview-Elgin-Millville. Andy Neumann went 3-for-4 to lead Lewiston-Altura. HVL La Crescent 6-1, Hayfield 4-3 HAYFIELD, Minn. — In a game that was suspended after one inning two weeks ago, La Crescent’s Tim Verthein struck out 11 and walked two to power the Lancers. Levon Mueller homered, and Brandon Verthein went 2-for-3 with a double, a triple and two RBIs in the first game. Hayfield earned a split, holding the Lancers to three hits in the second game. Softball Three Rivers Conference GMLOK 8, FC-L 5 PRESTON, Minn. — Jordan Sabatke struck out six in seven innings and went 2-for-2 at the plate to lead Grand Meadow-Leroy-Ostrander-Kingsland. Katie Melver had a two-run home run and Kathy Keene went 2-for-4 for Fillmore Central-Lanesboro.
