Cotter High School’s softball team won two games in in two places Monday, starting with a 14-1 win at Kasson-Mantorville before making the 20-minute trip to Pine Island and defeating Kenyon-Wanamingo 22-3. Both games lasted just five innings. “It was a long day,” Cotter coach Pat Bowlin said. “Kenyon-Wanamingo was supposed to come here, but we couldn’t find a day that worked, so we got creative.” The Ramblers also got offensive, scoring five or more runs in an inning five times. Laura Erickson went 5-for-6 with three doubles, a triple, a home run and seven RBIs on the two-win day. Anna Buege and Whitney Wisecup each had three hits in the opener. Jenny Gilbertson went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs, and Micaela Trainor went 2-for-3 with two triples and three RBIs in the nightcap. Big Nine WSHS 8, Rochester Century 2 ROCHESTER, Minn. — Erin Buswell struck out four and allowed just two hits over the complete-game win to lead WSHS. Jessica Fratzke went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs, and Hannah Norman and Brittani Turvey each had doubles for the Winhawks, who scored three runs to open the game. Fratzke, Megan Lueck and Kim Hawthorne each had two-out RBI singles. Baseball Hiawatha Valley Cotter 7, Z-M 2 ZUMBROTA, Minn. — Thomas O’Brien struck out five over a complete-game victory and added two hits to help the Ramblers hand Zumbrota-Mazeppa just its second HVL loss of the season. Matt Wolfe went 3-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI, and Andy Wolfe and Kyle Florin each added two hits for the Ramblers, who jumped out to a 3-0 lead. Z-M answered with two runs in the third to cut the deficit to one, but Cotter’s Tommy Mullen delivered a two-run double and O’Brien held the Cougars scoreless the rest of the way. Boys golf HVL triangular Cotter finished third (341) behind second place Stewartville (330) and meet champion Lake City (309) at Cedar Valley Golf Course. Andrew Fricke carded the low score for the Ramblers with a 7-over-par 79. Fricke shot 1-under on the front nine. Girls golf HVL triangular Cotter had a second-place finish with a team total of 442. Lake City won the meet at Cedar Valley Golf Course with a 387. Cotter seniors Rory Biesanz and Jessica Giers each shot 103. It was the low 18-hole round for both golfers. Boys tennis Big Nine WSHS 5, Austin 2 AUSTIN, Minn. — Kyle Martin, Erik Chapman and Cameron Weess picked up singles victories for the Winhawks. The Winhawks also picked up points from the doubles teams of Jay Moran and Jon Sanvik, and Martin Feddersen and Kyle Swanson. The Winhawks have two regular season dual meets remaining, including a critical road meet Thursday at Rochester Century in a battle for second place in the Big Nine Conference. Nonconference Cotter 6, Decorah 3 DECORAH, Iowa — The Ramblers won four of six singles matches — three in straight-sets — and took two of three doubles matches en route to the win. Jake DeMarais (7-6, 6-4), Connor Ferris (6-3, 6-1) and Sam Werle (6-3, 6-2) each recorded straight-sets singles victories, with Ross Heymans coming away with a 6-0, 2-6, 10-5 victory in No. 1 singles. Joey Nadeau and Ferris won 11-9 in No. 2 doubles, and Ludi Leser and Werle won 10-1 in No. 3 doubles.
