Why are politicians paid to campaign?

.
I wonder what would happen if I went up to my boss and said, “I want to take a year or so off to look for a better job, but I want to stay on the payroll while I’m looking?”

Isn’t this exactly what our politicians are doing? They were hired (or elected) to a job paying more than $150,000 a year for what ever they are supposed to do, but while campaigning, they don’t go to work but still get paid.
Tell me the system isn’t askew.
