After splitting points with visiting Mankato West in singles play, the Winhawks swept the Scarlets in doubles action to win the Big Nine Conference match 5-2 Saturday.

“The doubles did a nice job of stepping up today and we needed them to do well,” WSHS coach Tom Sanvik said. “They really took care of business and that was exciting to see. That was the turning point of the match.”

The Winhawks (9-3, 5-1) doubles teams of Jon Sanvik and Erik Chapman, Kyle Swanson and Martin Feddersen, and Alec Brown and Alex Thomas all won in straight sets.

WSHS’s Kyle Martin defeated Hannan Mir with a late charge 4-6, 6-4, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. WSHS’s Noah Short defeated Alex Kim 6-0, 6-2 at No. 3 singles.

“Mankato West is always one of the stronger teams in the Big Nine,” coach Sanvik said. “Our kids fought hard.”

Cotter’s Ross Heymans battled back to defeat Nick Hoelmer 4-6, 7-6, 6-0 at No. 2 singles.

“We just gave them some runs,” WSHS coach Matt Smith said. “That’s kind of the story of the season right now. We have to get better at making the plays. Especially at this point in the season when pitching is so critical.”

The Winhawks took a 3-0 lead over Northfield after the top of the fifth, but went on to give up back-to-back, four-run innings and relinquish the lead.
