AREA ROUNDUP: Abbott fans 18, lifts St. Charles with bat

ST. CHARLES, Minn. — After nine innings and 18 strikeouts on the mound, Erin Abbott ended the game with her bat.

Abbott pitched a nine-inning complete game and hit a walk-off, solo home run in the bottom of the ninth to lift St. Charles High School’s softball team to a 4-3 victory Thursday over Rochester Century.

Abbott struck out 18 with three walks and allowed eight hits over nine innings to improve to 9-0 for the undefeated Saints (11-0).

Abbott also went 3-for-4 with a home run, two doubles, three RBIs and two runs.

Abbott, who went into Thursday’s game with just one earned run allowed, now has 102 strikeouts in 61 innings.

St. Charles’ Emily Nelson went 2-for-3 with two doubles.

Breanna Berke went 1-for-3 for Rochester Century, and tied the game 3-3 to force extra innings with a two-out, two-run home run in the top of the seventh.

Hiawatha Valley League

La Crescent 11, Rochester Lourdes 5

ROCHESTER, Minn. — La Crescent junior Michelle Lassig went 3-for-4 with two home runs, a double and four RBIs.

Kayla Trocinski went 2-for-5 and sophomore Skylar Minegar added a 3-for-5 performance for the Lancers.

PRESTON, Minn. — Alyssa Franzen went 2-for-3 with an RBI, and Kayla Peterson allowed just two hits and struck out 13 over the complete-game win to lead Lewiston-Altura.

Cassie Keene had both hits for Fillmore Central/Lanesboro.

Southeast

Hope Lutheran 1, Houston 0

Hope Lutheran sophomore Felicia Meyer had 12 strikeouts, while allowing three hits and no walks, in a complete-game victory.

Patriots junior catcher Megan Luehmann hit a two-out double in the bottom of the fourth and scored the go-ahead run on a bunt single from freshman Madison Ludford.

Luehmann went 2-for-3 with two doubles and a run and threw out four of four Houston base runners.

Meyer, who has thrown every pitch for the Patriots this season, improved to 6-3 with 133 strikeouts against five earned runs and 24 walks in 59 innings.

Houston, which dropped a half-game behind Hope Lutheran for second place in the Southeast Conference, advanced just one runner to second and never advanced a runner to third.

Spring Grove/Caledonia 11, Mabel-Canton 0 (5)

MABEL, Minn. — Cassie Gran scattered three hits and struck out seven, and Libby Augedahl went 3-for-4 with a double and a triple to lead Spring Grove/Caledonia.

C-FC 15-12, Eleva-Strum 0-1

FOUNTAIN CITY, Wis. — In Game 1, Annette Foegen did it all for Cochrane-Fountain City. She pitched a shutout on the mound and went 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBIs. Beth Murphy went 2-for-2 with four RBIs for the Pirates.

In Game 2, C-FC used a 10-run second inning to pull away. Murphy, Brittney Schmitt, Anne Drazkowski and Kayla Palkowski all had extra-base hits for the Pirates.

Whitehall 3, M-M 2

WHITEHALL, Wis. — Stacey Johnson struck out six and went 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI to lead Whitehall.

Jordan Blaken went 2-for-3 to lead Melrose-Mindoro, which suffered its first loss of the season.

Ind./Gil. 8, Alma 2

ALMA, Wis. — Independence/Gilmanton scored three runs in the third inning, two in the fourth, one in the fifth and two in the sixth to go up 8-0. Alma scored two in the sixth.

Arcadia 11-8, BRF 2-1

BLACK RIVER FALLS, Wis. — Kayla Finner picked up the win in both games, leading Arcadia to a sweep of Black River Falls.

Finner struck out 11 on the opener and added five strikeouts in the second game. At the plate, she added a home run and four RBIs in the first game.

G-E-T 7, West Salem 2

GALESVILLE, Wis. — Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau picked up its second conference win with a strong effort from freshman pitcher Justine Emerson, who allowed just six hits. She finished with 11 strikeouts and one walk.

Hiawatha Valley League

La Crescent 5, K-M 1

KASSON, Minn. — La Crescent senior Patrick Falk struck out 10 and picked up the win with a complete game two-hitter.

The Lancers scored three runs in the top of the first and never relinquished the lead.

Lancers senior LeVon Mueller went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.

Three Rivers

R-P 6, St. Charles 4

ST. CHARLES, Minn. — Logan Brand went 4-for-4, Steve Koenen went 2-for-3, and Cody Frick struck out six over a complete-game victory to lead Rushford-Peterson.

Jake Braun and Matt Putzier each went 2-for-4 to lead St. Charles.

P-E-M 7, Caledonia 3

PLAINVIEW, Minn. — Ben Keilholtz went seven innings and struck out 10 and Bryan Schneider had an RBI single to lead Plainview-Elgin-Millville.

Trent Meyer had two RBIs for Caledonia.

Houston 14, Hope Lutheran 0 (5)

Steven Thompson and Brett Benson combined for 10 strikeouts and a no-hitter to lead Houston.

Benson went 2-for-2 with a double, and Andy Sires went 2-for-2 for the Hurricanes, who scored 14 runs on just six hits.

Spring Grove 3, M-C 2

SPRING GROVE, Minn. — Andy Melbostad drove in two runs on a double in the bottom of the fifth inning to give Spring Grove the lead for good.

Dakotah Rostad went 2-for-3 and picked up the save for Spring Grove and Nick Richert went 2-for-2 for Mabel-Canton.

Boys track and field

Blair-Taylor Invitational

BLAIR, Wis. — Nick Smelja won the 110-meter hurdles (19.4 seconds) and the 300 hurdles (46.9 seconds), and Adam Servias won the 100 dash (11.7 seconds) and the 200 dash (25 seconds) to lead Independence/Gilmanton to an 84-61 win over Blair-Taylor and an 88-67 win over Cochrane-Fountain City.

Kevin Wels won the long jump and the triple jump to lead C-FC to a 78-59 win over Blair-Taylor.

Dairyland Duals

WHITEHALL, Wis. — Host Whitehall went 2-0 to finish with the best dual record at the three-team meet. Melrose-Mindoro went 1-1.

Whitehall’s Ross Sygulla garnered first-place finishes in the 100-meter hurdles (16.9 seconds) and the 300 hurdles (44.9).

Norse thrower Wes Dubiel won the shot put (40 feet, 1/4 inch) and the discus (104-5).

Girls track and field

Blair-Taylor Invitational

BLAIR, Wis. — Bria Halama won the 400-meter dash (1:05.2) and the triple jump (32-71/2) to lead Independence/Gilmanton to a 94-51 win over Blair-Taylor and a 112-34 win over Cochrane-Fountain City.

Blair-Taylor won the 3,200 relay (11:51.9), the 800 relay (2:06.8) and the 400 relay (1:01.2) en route to an 80-56 win over C-FC.

Dairyland Duals

WHITEHALL, Wis. — Whitehall finished the meet 2-0 at the three-team meet, while Melrose-Mindoro finished 1-1 for the second-best record.

On the girls side, Whitehall’s Jodi Bender won the 110 hurdles (16.9), 300 hurdles (48.3), long jump (17-53/4) and triple jump (34-11/2).
