CITY ROUNDUP: WSHS bats come alive in split

ROCHESTER, Minn. — It took a little while, but Winona Senior High School’s softball team got it going in a doubleheader Thursday against Rochester John Marshall.

The Winhawks fell in the first game 4-1, but came back and pounded their way to a 9-2 victory in the second game.
“I was very happy to get a split after losing the first game,” WSHS coach Dave Heise said.

In Game 1, the Winhawks struggled with the bats, only accumulating two hits.

Rochester John Marshall starter Deanna Mock dominated, going seven innings with 14 strikeouts and two walks.

In Game 2, the Winhawks’ bats came to life. Jessica Fratzke went 4-for-5 with a double, Hannah Norman went 2-for-3 with a double and a two-run home run in the fourth inning.

Erin Buswell started the second game for WSHS. She went seven innings, struck out 10 and walked one.

Boys and girls golf

Cotter High School’s boys and girls golf teams defeated St. Charles at Cedar Valley Golf Course.

The boys won 168-205, while the girls won 227-240.

Andrew Fricke won medalist honors for the boys, shooting 38. Aaron Theis shot 41, Garrett Welle 43 and Spencer Sieracki 46 for the Ramblers.

In girls action, Rory Biesanz shot 55 and Jessica Giers shot 56 to lead Cotter.

St. Charles’ Jo Mueller took medalist honors with a 49.

OWATONNA, Minn. — Lauren Becker of the Winhawks shot a 94 to tie for second place.

Carrie Hoffman (110), Tia Benson (118) and Michelle Fakler (122) rounded out the scoring for WSHS.

Boys tennis

WSHS 7, Albert Lea 0


ALBERT LEA, Minn. — The visiting Winhawks made quick work of the Tigers in the Big Nine Conference.

The Winhawks swept singles and doubles play in straight sets, including a 6-1, 6-0 victory from Noah Short at No. 1 singles, a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 2 singles from Kyle Martin and a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 3 doubles from the Winhawks’ team of Alex Thomas and Alec Brown.

“It was a good trip to Albert Lea,” WSHS coach Tom Sanvik said. “The kids got off the bus and took care of business.”

The Winhawks are scheduled to host Mankato West at 2 p.m. Saturday. The match is scheduled for the WSHS tennis courts, but could move indoors to St. T’s depending on the weather.
