City prep roundup: Becker tops leaderboard

A day after Lauren Becker finished in the top five at a triangular, she came out at her home course and took co-medalist honors in leading Winona Senior High School’s girls golf team.

Becker shot 85 at the par 71 Bridges Golf Club on Tuesday for the Winhawks. The effort came after shooting 91 Monday in snowy conditions at Faribault, Minn.

“As the weather gets warmer, she gets better,” WSHS coach Scott Mlynczak. “She played an outstanding front nine.”

Becker shot 41 on the front nine, getting a birdie on No. 2.

Winona finished third in the meet (435). Mankato West won (385).

ZUMBROTA, Minn. — Jenny Gilbertson hit a two-run home run in the top of the eighth inning two pitches after Zumbrota-Mazeppa’s left fielder dropped a fly ball in foul territory to lead the Ramblers to a crucial victory in a battle of conference unbeatens.

Cotter freshman Lauren Bowlin allowed two runs — one earned — in the first inning but allowed just three hits and struck out six the rest of the way in the complete-game victory.

“It was a huge win for us, and it was one of the most exciting regular-season games I’ve ever been involved with,” Cotter coach Pat Bowlin said. “Winning the conference is very important to us, and we’re in the driver’s seat now, but it didn’t look good with two outs in the sixth inning.”

Sophomore Allie Gernes went 2-for-4, including a two-run home run with two outs in the sixth inning to tie the game.
