Published - Tuesday, April 29, 2008 City roundup: Cotter’s Theis shines at Somerby PINE ISLAND, Minn. — Aaron Theis took medalist honors despite the weather on Monday in leading the Cotter High School boys golf team. Theis shot an 81 at the par 72 Somerby Golf Course. Cotter finished one stroke behind Byron at the Triangular with a 359. “Aaron shot a 3-over 39 on the front nine,” Cotter coach Jason Yusten said. “Considering the snow was flying when we started out, that’s a pretty good score.” The Cotter girls finished second at the three-team triangular (495). Faribault Triangular FARIBAULT, Minn. — Tia Benson shot a 91 to lead Winona at the par 73 Faribault Country Club. “It was pretty tough conditions,” WSHS coach Scott Mlynczak said. “It’s been that way all spring. We just need some warm weather to come our way. It’s tough to have fun playing golf in this.” Boys tennis WSHS 6, Decorah (Iowa) 1 The Winhawks gained momentum heading into a key Big Nine Conference dual today against undefeated Rochester Mayo. WSHS (8-2) swept its doubles matches, winning each in straight sets. Kyle Martin and Jay Moran headlined the doubles’ sweep with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 1 doubles. Noah Short and Cameron Weess won 6-3, 6-0 at No. 2 doubles, while Alex Thomas and Sandro Krkljes won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 doubles. WSHS sophomores Erik Chapman and Jon Sanvik, along with freshman Martin Fedderson, picked up the Winhawks’ singles victories.
