College roundup: WSU softball team splits at Microtel Inn and Suites Classic

NORTH MANKATO, Minn. — The Winona State University softball team split its games against Nebraska-Omaha and Missouri Western on Sunday at the Microtel Inn and Suites Classic.

In the first game, WSU (29-13) knocked off No. 5 ranked Nebraska-Omaha 6-5 in 12 innings. Molly Bjelland had an RBI groundout in the top of the 12th inning to give the Warriors the lead.
“It was a tremendous game between two good teams,” WSU coach Greg Jones said. “The game just went back and forth.”

Trailing 4-3 in the top of the seventh, Amanda Wilhelm hit a two-run home run to put the Warriors back in front. In the bottom of the inning, Nebraska-Omaha’s (38-10) Chanel Reaves tied the game with a sacrifice fly.

WSU starting pitcher Kristen Fossell went all 12 innings while allowing five hits, four walks and striking out 10.

In the second game against Missouri Western, the Warriors started from behind as the Griffons scored two in the top of the first.

In the bottom of the inning, Bjelland belted a three-run home run to give WSU the lead.

In the top of the seventh, Missouri Western (25-25) scored two and took the lead on a Katie Bruce RBI double. The Griffons held the lead and won 4-3.

Bjelland finished 2-for-3 and Terra Halron went 3-for-4 for the Warriors.

MIAC

Gustavus 7-6, SMU 0-2

In Game 1, four different players had multiple hits to lead Gustavus (26-6, 16-4).

Julie Mahre went 2-for-4, Andrea Brown went 2-for-2 with an RBI, Emily Klein went 3-for-4 with a double and Rachael Click went 3-for-4 with two home runs, five RBIs and two runs scored.

SMU (15-19, 13-7) only put together two hits in the first game, one by Cassie Otte and the other by Kellie Simons. Gustavus’ Callie Nelsen shut down the Cardinals, going all seven innings and striking out eight.

In Game 2, SMU got off to a 2-1 lead after the second inning but couldn’t hold it. Julie Mahre highlighted a five run fourth inning for Gustavus with a three-run double.

Upper Iowa 10-5, WSU 2-3

FAYETTE, IA — After winning both games on Saturday, Upper Iowa made it a four-game series sweep of the Warriors on Sunday.

In Game 1, WSU (19-18, 14-14) gave up runs in the first five innings and allowed 13 hits to the Peacocks.

Upper Iowa (26-23, 22-7) was led by Nick Fjelland, who went 3-for-4 with two doubles and four RBIs, Kreston Albright went 3-for-4 with two doubles and three runs scored, Ronnie Kurihara went 2-for-2 with a home run and four RBIs and T.J. Johnson had a home run and two runs scored.

In Game 2, Fjelland broke a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the sixth with a home run to left field. Johnson had an RBI single in the inning as well.

Brock Spangenberg went 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI for the Peacocks while Sam Henriksen went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI for WSU.

Okoboji Invitational

ARNOLDS PARK, IA — On the second and final day of the Okoboji Invitational, Upper Iowa took home first place, shooting 647. WSU had to settle for eighth place out of 10 teams, shooting 702, at Emerald Hills Country Club.

Rachael Schmidt of Upper Iowa took home medalist honors, shooting 155.

Courtney Sovereign shot 174 and Megan Placko, Tara Christensen, and Hilary Botten all shot 176 for the Warriors.
