Prep roundup: Demarais, Heymans lift Cotter boys tennis team over Lake City

Jake Demarais and Ross Heymans each recorded straight-set singles victories Thursday to lead Cotter High School’s boys tennis team to a 4-3 win over Lake City.

Demarais won 6-1, 6-2 in No. 1 singles, and Heymans earned a 6-2, 6-2 win in No. 2 singles.

Joey Nadeau and Connor Ferris earned a 6-0, 6-2 win in No. 1 doubles, and Collin Michener and Mike Turek won 6-1, 6-1 in No. 2 doubles.

“We tried a different lineup and mixed some singles and doubles guys around,” Cotter coach Blake Duden said. “It went pretty well. I was happy with the outcome.”

Golf

Rochester Mayo 395, WSHS 423

Lauren Becker shot a 93 — seven strokes behind the leader — Thursday to place second individually and lead Winona Senior High School’s girls golf team in a 395-423 loss to Rochester Mayo.

Tia Benson shot a 97 and placed third, and Carrie Hoffman (109), Michelle Fakler (124), Kelsey Irwin (150) and Rihana Rothering (153) placed 14th, 15th, 16th and 17th, respectively.

“I thought we played rather well in some pretty tough conditions,” WSHS coach Scott Mlynczak said. “The girls battled, and they continued to improve today.”
