WSHS set to open Big Nine play

The Winona Senior High School girls golf team begins the Big Nine Conference season today.

The Winhawks, who have had just one meet so far this season, head to the Rochester Eastwood Golf Course for a dual match with Rochester Mayo.

First-year coach Scott Mlynczak doesn’t have a lot of golfers out this season, but the ones he has are hard-working.

“We lost a pretty big senior class,” Mlynczak said. “The nine I got work hard. They enjoy the game and each other. That will make it easy.”

Junior Lauren Becker is one of the Winhawks’ best golfers.

“Lauren should be pretty competitive from tee to green,” Mlynczak said.

Kelsey Erwin is WSHS’s only senior, and Tia Benson could break out at some point this season.

“Tia, she’s got a great power game,” Mlynczak said. “I think she’ll be a good contributor. Her and Lauren, I look at them to shoot in the 30s.”

The Winhawks should have a solid four in each meet. It’s those final two spots where Mlynczak is looking for people to break out.

“That’s the key,” he said. “We have two freshmen and two eighth graders out, as well. We’re going to do our best.”

Making a run at the two other varsity spots for WSHS should be junior Michelle Fakler and sophomore Rihana Rothering.
