College roundup: Gannon helps SMU softball team sweep Carleton

.
NORTHFIELD, Minn. — Katy Gannon went 7-for-8 with three doubles, three stolen bases, five RBIs and four runs scored on the day in leading Saint Mary’s University softball team to a pair of wins on Tuesday.

SMU defeated Carleton 7-1 in the opener, getting six strikeouts in the complete-game win from Sarah Fitzgerald. The Cardinals won 15-3 in the second game, including Kellie Simons’ first collegiate home run.
Teammate Crystal Otte, who entered the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader riding a 27-game hitting streak, saw that streak come to an end after going 0-for-4 in Game 1.

“I feel bad for Cassie, she’s been amazing at the plate all season long,” said SMU coach Jen Miller of her junior outfielder, who rebounded from just her second hitless outing of the season by going 3-for-4 with three runs scored and a pair of RBIs in Game 2.

Gannon, who was the reigning MIAC Player of the Week, led SMU’s 13-hit Game 1 attack, going 4-for-4 with a pair of runs scored, an RBI and three stolen bases, while teammate Jenny Giannini 3-for-4.

SMU had 15 hits — including a 3-for-4 effort from Gannon that included three doubles and four RBIs — in Game 2.
