WSU pours on offense in NSIC sweep

.
The Winona State University baseball team put together back-to-back dominating performances Sunday at Loughrey Field, defeating the University of Minnesota Crookston 17-1 and 15-2 in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader.

In the first game, the Warriors took little time establishing themselves. WSU scored two runs in the first inning. Ross Hellenbrand hit an RBI single that brought Dru Mickelson home, and Ronnie Olson stole home.

The Warriors put on an offensive clinic in the second inning, scoring 10 runs. Mike Wendland started things off with a line drive to left field that brought in two WSU baserunners. Mickelson followed up with an RBI double, and Hellenbrand hit a three-run home run to left field.

John Magee and Jamie Soyk sandwiched RBI singles around Brett Maxwell’s RBI double.

By the time UMC tagged Mickelson out at first to end the inning, the Warriors had built a commanding 12-0 lead.

In the third inning, the Warriors brought two runners in off Magee’s double. In the fourth inning, Jared Anderson’s RBI double brought in two runners and Magee’s RBI single pushed the score to 17-0.

UMC had a few opportunities to lessen the deficit, with the bases loaded in both the fifth and sixth innings, but were only able to capatilize once when Adam Lee scored in the fifth.

In the nightcap, the Warriors scored four runs in the first inning and cruised from there.

In the third inning, Sam Henriksen had a RBI single, Hellenbrand had an RBI double with the bases loaded and Maxwell scored off of an error

Joe Kley hit a home run to right field and Hans Heggernes added an RBI single in the sixth.

WSU got a scare in the second inning when Wendland was hit in the hand by a wild pitch. Wendland returned to the lineup in the next inning and is expected to play today as well.

WSU head coach Kyle Poock was able to go deep into his rotation, something that will help his team when they face UMC again in a doubleheader today starting at noon.

“We got contributions from a lot of people today,” Poock said. “Our goal is always to get three out of four wins in a series, and tomorrow we have a chance to get all four.”

" hols- which teams are you talking about??? cause all the teams use black as a third color. so not sure what you're talking about cause if you look closely there is even a little bit of black in the baseball unis. "

" It is nice to see that one team knows what WSU's school colors are.... Thanks baseball for wearing the purple and white. "
