St. Catherine may have been unwanted but the Saint Mary’s University softball team provided the necessary finish.
SMU came from seven runs down to win the first game 11-8 and came back from two one-run deficits to win the second game, 5-3.
In Game 1, after giving up seven runs in the first two innings, the Cardinals (12-14, 10-2) started the comeback, scoring four runs in the bottom of the second inning. A Kellie Simons two-run triple highlighted the inning.
In the bottom of the fifth, with RBI hits from Danielle Geske and Amy Zimniewicz, SMU scored seven runs on five hits to take the lead for good.
Zimniewicz finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs for the Cardinals in Game 1. Simons was 2-for-4 and scored twice. Teammate Mallory Betzold was 3-for-4 and Danielle Geske went 2-for-4.
In Game 2, the Cardinals’ Katy Gannon scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fifth inning to break a 3-3 tie.
Gannon went 4-for-4 in the second game, while teammate Cassie Otte was 2-for-3. They both had RBIs.
Simons went 2-for-3, and Sarah Fitzgerald won both games improving to 10-9 on the season.
NSIC Crossover Tourney
BISMARCK, N.D. — Winona State went 2-1 at the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference crossover tournament.
The Warriors lost the first game 2-1 to Mary in nine innings before beating Moorhead 4-1 and Crookston 9-0.
It only took five innings for the Warriors (25-12, 11-4) to defeat Crookston, getting a no-hitter from Courtney Strang. The freshman struck out 12 and walked two for her second no-hitter of the year.
Molly Bjelland was 2-for-2 with three runs scored. WSU had 10 hits.
In the win over Moorhead, WSU took advantage of three errors.
“I think we scored on all three,” WSU coach Greg Jones said.
Kristen Fossell struck out 12 and walked just one in getting the win. Amanda Wilhelm had an RBI double and Annie Stuedemann also had an RBI for WSU.
Chelsey Ewing went the distance in the opener, giving up just four hits and three walks in eight and two-third innings.
“She deserved to win,” Jones said. “We just didn’t score enough runs for her.”
A pair of walks, a sacrifice bunt and then an RBI single won it for Mary.
The Warriors scored their lone run in the first on a Bjelland RBI double.
Baseball
St. Thomas 5-9, St. Mary’s 0-3
ST. PAUL, Minn. — Brady Knudsen extended his hitting streak to a career-high 16 games for Saint Mary’s, which dropped a pair to St. Thomas, which is ranked 16th in Division III.
Knudsen was 2-for-3 in Game 1 and went 3-for-4 with a solo home run and two runs scored in the second game.
Alex Schmidt also had two hits in Game 1 for SMU. He and Knudsen accounted for four of SMU’s six hits against UST starter Ryan Fahey, who picked up his first win of the season with the complete-game effort.
In Game 2, UST scored three times in the first, twice in the second and once in the third to grab a 6-0 advantage, before SMU scored two in the top of the fourth — on Knudsen’s solo homer and the other on an RBI single by Schmidt.
Brandon Haugh got the Cardinals to within 6-3 with an RBI single in the fifth, but UST answered with a run in the fifth and two in the sixth to pull away.

MSU Maverick Invitational
WASECA, Minn. — After the first day of play, Winona State sits in second place with a score of 352. MSU-Mankato currently holds first place after shooting 339 on Saturday.
MSU-Mankato’s Trisha Schill was Saturday’s medalist, shooting a 79.
For the Warriors, Megan Placko shot an 84 and is currently tied for third place, Hilary Botten shot an 87 and is tied for ninth, Katie Schuller shot an 88 and is tied for 11th and Tara Christensen is tied for 14th after shooting an 89.
Women’s tennis
St. Olaf 6, SMU 3
NORTHFIELD, Minn. — Toni Troumbly got the only singles win and teamed up with Abby Cooper to get a win at No. 2 doubles for Saint Mary’s
Kayla Lenz and Aubrey Hirsch got the other win for SMU, 8-3 at No. 1 doubles.

NORTHFIELD, Minn. — Walter Mannino got the win at No. 1 singles for Saint Mary’s. He also teamed up with Steve Clements to get the win at No. 1 doubles.
