My favorite memory is the day they brought me home. They picked me out of a big litter of multicolored four-legged friends. I was wrapped up all cozy and made the trip to my new home. Once I got here the whole family “oohed” and “aahed.” It was so dark at the last place. There were families who looked at me, but they usually passed me right by. This family laid their eyes on me and knew I was the one for them. I couldn’t have been happier. At my new home I stayed humble and did my best to stay low maintenance. It must have worked. You should see where they put me. I have great views of the front yard and the backyard when the family is out. I just love it here.
Mom and Dad pay special attention to me every day. They make sure all of my accessories are tucked in around me; they clean me, rub me and pat me down. Dinner is my favorite time of the day. There are always leftovers that spill over the plate and I can catch those in an instant. I never seem to gain a pound from it, but Mom fusses nonetheless.
Throughout the year I get adorned with seasonal toys and outfits. I am so spoiled! Just this last week I had Easter eggs and bunnies in my basket. If I had a tail, this is when I would wag it. Spring and summer is around the corner, too. Since they brought me home I have enjoyed fresh fruits and vegetables from the garden. I usually have to share with the family and the guinea pig, but I don’t mind. ’Tis the season of plenty, and there is always enough to go around. I love it when Mom brings in freshly cut flowers. They spruce up the house quite a bit and make me look ever so stoic.
When the kids get home from school, I stand right there waiting for them. Never a day goes by that they ignore me. They’ll show me their backpacks, homework and sometimes they’ll even share their after school snack with me. I get to see their smiles and triumphs. Sometimes I see their tears, too. I always wish I could reach right out and hug them, but I can’t.
Some people might say my life is boring and routine, but I don’t think so! When guests come over I get all puffy with pride. I extend myself as far as I can go. Naturally I wait for the food first, but I always join in on the fun if cards or board games are played. I want to be right under everyone’s game.
I had dreamed about being placed with a nice family that would appreciate me and be with me every day. I had hoped I would not get stuck with a family or in a room where no one even knew I was there. I did not want to be chosen for my looks alone, but instead for my function and my charm. I knew if given the chance I could make a family very happy. It’s not always easy being a kitchen table at the Schmidt house, but I wouldn’t trade it for any other piece of furniture on the block.
Tania Schmidt is young going on old and not quite sure why. She thinks it has something to do with being a fulltime wife, mother, employee and a caretaker for an unnaturally needy wiener dog named Ducky. She pays taxes to Goodview, but lives in Minnesota City.
