WSU junior gets bar logo tattoo for free beer

.
Weston King may literally become the butt of jokes.

He’ll laugh along with people, though, especially if it’s in Mulligan’s Irish Pub in Winona. They’ll pay for their beer — he’ll be drinking for free.

For life.

King, a 21-year-old Winona State University junior majoring in business administration, struck a deal with Mulligan’s Irish Pub owner Dan English: If he got the Mulligan’s logo tattooed on his butt, free domestic tap beer would be his for the taking for life.

“I’ve watched Wes drink beer before, and this may have been a bad business decision on my part,” joked English, who may make a special ID card for King so he doesn’t have to drop his pants every time he wants a pitcher.

In front of a crowd of eight of his friends Sunday afternoon, the tattoo needle buzzed over King’s right buttock under the hands of Red Wing Tattoo Parlor artist Dek Stone.

“I’m definitely never going to look at Mulligan’s sign the same way ever again,” Stone said.

King held the hand of his roommate Christin Reminga during the inking, a process Stone estimated would cost about $70.

The tattoo will pay for itself, said Bill Cienian, another of King’s roommate.

“He’ll consume $1,300 a year in tap beer, assuming the price of beer doesn’t go up, which it will,” Cienian said.

Ryan Gooding, King’s roommate who put the design together, suspects others may try to follow in King’s footsteps.

“This kind of guerilla marketing has never gone on before,” Gooding said. “He’s setting a precedent.”

Gooding added a commemoration of WSU’s two national basketball titles to the Mulligan’s logo, which Cienian said was their inspiration for everything.

According to Cienian, Brady Moore, assistant coach of the basketball team and a Mulligan’s employee, promised King that he could hold the national championship trophy in a photo if he

went through with the tattoo.

“Everything about this is awesome,” said King, during one of the six timeouts his friends gave him during the tattoo session. “For life, for glory, for passion, but mainly for the beer.”

" warriorsrock, you haven't actually read most of the comments, have you? If you had, you'd understand that the tattoo itself is only one part of the dialogue. These comments aren't just about someone getting any old tattoo. Some people have brought up very good 'talking points' in these comments, but if you don't read the comments and comprehend them, the entire thing is just lost on you... "

" Do you think the world is a little too commercial? This generation grew up with corporate sponsorship on everything, so why not take it one step further? The stunt certainly got Winona talking, but did any of you stop in for a beer because of this article?
I don't know how long the bar has been in business, but I'm guessing they are either betting on this student moving away from Winona someday or they'll renig on the agreement when new management takes over. "

" Young Vet, I apologize if this sounds rude, but can you read? Here's what I wrote: "...I didn't particularly like the fact that this article ended up on the front page." Where do you see the word 'upset' in my sentence? You just did exactly what I just wrote about in that comment - you 'supersized' what I wrote. You upgraded me to being 'upset' when I am in fact not at all upset. You decided for yourself that I was upset, then you wrote it, which probably made it real in your mind. Just read things as people write them, don't pile on whatever ideas you feel like adding. I cannot believe how many people do that. No, it isn't the biggest issue facing the world today, but it makes me wonder about people... "

It was on the front page because it was the most important thing that has happened in this dump of town since the WSU Basketball Team won their second championship in three years. That's why it was on the front page. It's not my fault the town sucks..... "

" I see that yet another person [WSU7373] thinks respondents here need to "chill out". I laugh every time I see that over-used, meaningless expression. It is an empty comment uttered by people who are too lazy to think of anything intelligent to say or write. It amuses me how many people think I am against tattoos, or against drinking, or against college students, simply because I didn't particularly like the fact that this article ended up on the front page. People read so much more into a comment than is actually there. Then they tell people to move elsewhere, or to "chill out". Whatever. "

" lewiston: Can I assume you and tat boy are the same age? If the best you can offer is telling the residents of Winona to move out if we don't like what happens in our town, I think you have a lot growing up to do.

While the universities employ a number of my friends, I think you overplay the positive role some of the students have on our community.

On the other hand, I don't see a problem with this guy's tat or the bar that it promotes. It just ain't the end of the world folks. Lotta kids in the Navy his age getting tats for basically the same reason: peer pressure. "

This was not an advertising ploy but so what if he gets a few tap beers. The bartenders at mulligan's know when to stop serving him - and everyone else - so people need to chill out. "

Please, WDN, what are all these comments then?

Wes gave you a story, in fact a front page story. He allowed you to place his name, in your newspaper, to fill a space readers pay you for.

Since he is the one who made you your money; at least, have the decency to keep slander, profanity and personal attacks made towards him, off this page! "

It's his ass and not yours, so what do you care? To all you vocal, up tight, 'think I am always right' people, GET OVER IT!! Where did you read that I do otherwise? Please point it out to me. In your next comment you tell me to "...deal with it and shut my mouth for once." That is extremely rude and absolutely unacceptable in a PUBLIC FORUM, where nobody has a right to tell someone else to not share. I have the same right to comment here as you do, so get off your high horse - and don't put words in my mouth again. You can comment on what I write, but NOT on what I DON'T write. "

You just have to come to the grip its a college town and people are going to drink they are not your kids perfect stranger so let them do what they want its there lives not yours! Last time I checked there has not really been any issues in Winona with deaths like LaCrosse. Or accidents for that matter. People that go downtown in Winona for the most part walk or have a driver.... "

fozzy bear wrote on Apr 19, 2008 11:07 AM:

" Ok i get your point, but drinking in Winona has gone down drastically. I am a manager at one of the popular bars downtown, and I have seen the business go from wall to wall people. Now it's nowhere near that and it sucks people need that job as a form of living not just fun. Drinking in this town is on a heavy decline in the past two years, and i'm pretty sure it will keep going down. "

PerfectStranger wrote on Apr 19, 2008 10:48 AM:

" Lewiston, the issue here is more than "...just a tattoo." I am not against tattoos. I am not against publicity stunts, unless they are dangerous. No, I do not think that an article like this will lead to binge drinking, underage drinking, etc., but I don't like the promotion of an alcohol-related 'stunt' when it runs counter to the concerns this community already has regarding alcohol abuse, especially regarding the colleges. In my opinion the editors of the WDN should consider how it looks to send mixed messages - "Yes, the alcohol issue is serious", or "Hey everyone, check out the latest in beer drinkin' fun and frivolity!" Does our society have issues with drinking, or is it all one big joke? Which is it? "

PerfectStranger wrote on Apr 19, 2008 10:31 AM:

I replied to comments you made which directly implied that certain other people (like me) needed to chill out, get a sense of humor, etc. My response (not an attack) was appropriate. I have no intention of suggesting that you need to get a life, or change your sense of humor. You shouldn't imply that I need to. Okay? "

It was for Engo to show his appreciation of his support for WSU and helping us out in Springfield. I disagree with this being on the front page, but I didn't say it shouldn't be in the paper at all, that would be censorship. I do know that the editorial staff at a newspaper have the power to decide what is printed and where it is positioned. I would like to know where the WDN editors and publisher stand on the subject of alcohol use and abuse. Their position seems fluid - present alcohol issues as gravely troubling one day, then toss it out as laugh-riot entertainment the next. A news outlet really ought to make a commitment to one position, and make all other decisions accordingly. This is just my opinion... "

I'm sure Mulligan's considered the legal ramifications and put a stipulation (i.e. no more than 4 beers per visit) on it. "
