Max E. Benson

RUSHFORD, Minn. — Max E. Benson, 74, of rural Rushford, died Saturday, April 12, 2008, at his home.
Max was born July 21, 1933, in Alexander, Iowa, to Dale and Hazel (Arends) Benson. He was raised in Alexander until he was 16, when his family moved to Grand Meadow, Minn. He was a 1950 graduate of Elkton High School. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.
On January 21, 1961, Max married Bev Larson in Austin, Minn. Max and Bev moved to Peterson, Minn., in 1964, and in 1975 moved to their current residence east of Rushford. Max farmed all of his life.
He was a member of Rushford Lutheran Church, where he taught Sunday school for over 20 years. Max was past commander of the VFW in Rushford. He was a member of the American Legion Post in Rushford, the Minnesota Thoroughbred Association, Registered Red Angus Association, Money Creek Township Board and was one of the originators of the Root River Saddle Club.
Horses, cattle, conservation and most of all his grandchildren were the passions of his life.
Max is survived by his wife, Bev; one son, McLean (Becky) Benson of Winona; three daughters, Tracy (Dana) Coulter of Rushford, Toni (Kenny) Highum of Rushford and Terri Benson of St. Paul; six grandchildren, Jacob, Tyler, Shane, Cody, Kyra and Tanner; three brothers, Rex Benson of Plano, Texas, Reg (Diane) Benson of Grand Meadow, Minn., and Duane (Melissa) Benson of Lanesboro, Minn.; two sisters, Dixie (Ron) Mathews of Rhinelander, Wis., and Val Jean (Tom) Thorsen of Grand Meadow, Minn.; one sister-in-law, Darlene Benson of Grand Meadow, Minn.; and many nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Tricia; and one brother, Dale.
The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Rushford Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Roger Michaelson officiating. Burial will be at the Rushford Lutheran Cemetery, with military honors by the Rushford American Legion. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Hoff Funeral Homes Rushford Chapel and one hour prior to the service Thursday at the church.

Marcella Wilma (Rothering) Brown died Saturday, April 12, 2008, at the Asta Care Center in Toluca, Ill. She passed away peacefully after a long and memorable life of 93 years. (She claimed she was 113.)
She was born Nov. 23, 1914, in Buffalo County, Wis., the daughter of Joseph and Theresa (Grossell) Rothering.
Marcy lived and worked in Winona for over 50 years. She moved with her husband and family in 1966 to Rochelle, Ill., where she lived for over 30 years. She was an avid gardener and lover of all animals, having bred and raised over 100 cockatiels in her home. A loving wife, devoted mother and grandmother, she was a teacher and mentor for all those who had the privilege of knowing her. Her wonderful sense of humor was infectious, with a flair for the practical joke second to none. She will be deeply missed.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lynn H. Brown, in 1992; five brothers and two sisters, Lloyd Rothering, Kermit Rothering, Gaylord Rothering, Clifford Rothering,
Blaise Rothering, Marlene (Rothering) Oebser, and Gloria (Rothering) Anderson; an infant daughter; a grandson; and two great-grandsons.
One sister survives, Grace (Rothering) Larsen of Winona.
Surviving children are Laverne Rothering and wife Patricia of Minnesota City, Minn., Diane Dutch of Ogelsby, Ill., LaVonne Brown of Hanover Park, Ill., Sharon Lange of Winona, Lynn H. Brown Jr. and wife Teddy of LaSalle, Ill., Kathleen Ward of Peru, Ill., Marlene Walsh and husband Al of Washington, Ill., Darlene Probasco and husband Steve of Ozawkie Kan.; and granddaughter Melodee Hoffman of Mount Morris, Ill. She is also survived by 27 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.
Marcella has chosen the gift of anatomical donation as her final act of leaving this world a better place. As Albert Pine said: “What we have done for ourselves dies with us; what we have done for others and the world remains, and is immortal.” A memorial service for family and friends will be held at the home of her daughter Marlene Walsh in Washington, Ill.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests memorials are given to a veterans organization.

Raymond M. Ruppert
Dec. 31, 1909 — April 13, 2008
Raymond M. Ruppert, 98, of Winona died Sunday, April 13, 2008, at Sauer Memorial Home following a brief illness. He was born Dec. 31, 1909, in Winona to Frank and Caroline (Schuler) Ruppert. He graduated from Cotter High School in 1927. He married Adanelle Deilke on Aug. 1, 1932, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Winona.
Throughout his lifetime, Ray was employed at J.C. Penney Co., Winona State College, Coca-Cola Bottling Co., Schuler Chocolates and Gibson Discount. After retirement, he occasionally helped his son, Allyn, at Ruppert’s Grocery.
Ray was an avid bowler and took great pride in bowling with his four sons and later several of his grandsons on the Ruppert’s Grocery bowling team. He earned
the 1958 City Bowling Champion title for bowling a 730 series with his handicap.
Ray also served on the Winona City Council from 1973-75. He was a lifetime member of the Redmen Club, and a member of the St. Joseph’s Society, Winona YMCA and the Winona Area Widow’s/Widower’s Group. Ray was a member of Cathedral of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Winona.
Ray is survived by three sons, Gary (Dorothy) of Winona, Jim (Judy) of La Crescent, Minn., and David (Dixie) of Winona; two brothers, Eugene of Ft. Worth, Texas, and Richard of Menifee, Calif.; sister, Marion Elson of Fernley, Nev.; 11 grandchildren, James (Angela) Ruppert of La Crescent, Linda (Drew) Hamernik of Naples, Fla., Brian (Cindy) Ruppert of Winona, Paul Ruppert of La Crescent, Jay (Jennifer) Ruppert of La Crescent, Whitley Thompson of Winona, Sandra (Steve) Nelson of Apple Valley, Minn., Aaron (Annie) Ruppert of Stockton, Minn., Samantha (J.P.) Conway of Winona, Jaclyn (Travis) Buege of Winona, and Abbey Ruppert of Winona; 20 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Adanelle, in 1987; one daughter, Helen; one son, Allyn; two brothers, Jack and Gerald Ruppert; and two sisters, Evelyn McClellan and Delores Murray.
A funeral Mass will be offered Wednesday, April 16, 2008, at 11 a.m. at Cathedral of Sacred Heart Catholic Church with the Rev. Richard Colletti officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Winona.
Friends may call at Hoff Funeral and Cremation Service Hansen Goodview Chapel today from 4 to 7 p.m., where there will be a Christian prayer service at 6:30 p.m. Friends may also call one hour prior to the service at the church Wednesday.
The family suggests that memorials be designated to Sauer Memorial Home or Cathedral of Sacred Heart in Winona.

William R. (Bill) Groves, 88, of Anoka, Minn., formerly of Winona.
Bill was a member of the VFW, Legion post and DAV.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Olson; sister, Margaret Urban; and great-grandson, Matthew Abbott.
He is survived by his daughter, Sharon “Sherry” (Chuck) Dowd of Ramsey, Minn.; grandchildren, Jennifer Abbott of Coon Rapids, Minn., Jeffrey Dowd of
North Branch, Minn., and Kevin (Ella) Dowd of Coon Rapids, Minn.; great-grandchildren, Paul, Stephanie, Connor, Karleigh and Keegan; and special cat, Patsy. He is further survived by his niece, Patty Bublis of Plainsview, Texas; mother-in-law, Marie Olson of Winona; brother-in-law, Bob (Karen) Olson of Minnesota City, Minn.; sister-in-law, Betty (Darwin) Ellinghuysen of Brooksville, Fla., and other family, Lyle and Margrit Ives of Rocklin, Calif.
