Allen P. Gappa
Jan. 19, 1939 — April 7, 2008

Allen P. Gappa, 69, of Winona died Monday, April 7, 2008, at Community Memorial Hospital, Winona.

Allen Paul was born Jan. 19, 1939, in Winona to Clarence and Leone (Thrune) Gappa. A lifelong area resident, he graduated from Cotter High School in 1956. He served in the United States Navy on the USS Forrestal and USS Intrepid. On Oct. 28, 1961, he married Dian F. Foster at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, Winona.

Al was formerly employed at Peerless Chain, Winona, from 1961 until his retirement in 1994. He also worked part time at Cotter High School in the maintenance department from 1994 to 1997. Al was an avid Green Bay Packers fan, Minnesota Twins fan and an extreme fan of his kids’ and grandkids’ sport teams and interests.

He always loved to be a significant part of his family’s activities and was happiest when his whole family was able to be together. Al was a sincere, faithful and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend ... he will be sadly missed.

Al is survived by his wife, Dian of Winona; three children, Martin (Debbie) Gappa of Winona, Kelli (Mike) McElmury of Anoka, Minn., and Debbie (Rich) Bambenek of Winona; seven grandchildren, Andrew (fiancee Elizabeth Meredith) Gappa, Christopher Gappa, Joshua McElmury, Chelsea Bambenek, Ethan McElmury, Jake McElmury and Hunter Bambenek; three sisters, Barbara (Bob) Wieczorek of Edgewater, Fla., Dianne (Art) DeWitz of Rochester, Minn., and Marie (Ed) Feltz of Casa Grande, Ariz.; a sister-in-law, Ruth Gappa of Blair, Wis.; brothers-in-law, Darrell Foster of Onalaska, Wis., and Dan (Renee) Foster of La Crescent, Minn.; and a sister-in-law, Linda (Jerrie) Seibert of Winona; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Glenn Gappa; his parents-in-law, Ralph and Sally Foster; brother in-law, Bob Mathison; and sister in-law, Jeanie Foster.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Al will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 11, at St. Casimir Catholic Church, Winona, with the Rev. James Hennessy officiating. Entombment will be at St. Mary‘s Cemetery, Winona. Veterans military burial rites will be conducted by the American Legion Leon J. Wetzel Post 9, Winona.

Family will greet friends from 4 to 8 p.m. today, April 10, at Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home, Winona, with parish prayers at 7:30 p.m.

Honorary bearers will be Al‘s seven grandchildren.

Beatrice M. Van Loon

June 15, 1930 — April 8, 2008

HOUSTON, Minn. — Beatrice M. Van Loon, 77, of Houston died Tuesday, April 8, 2008, after a long battle with cancer.

Beatrice, known by most as Bea, was born June 15, 1930, in La Crosse, Wis., to John and Leila (Owen) Bymers. She was raised in Onalaska, Wis., moved to La Crosse at age 15, where she attended and graduated from Central High School. On June 8, 1951, she married Norman Van Loon in New Amsterdam, Wis. Bea had a vibrant Christian faith that was the foundation for her life and service. That faith and the importance of a personal relationship with Jesus Christ was lovingly passed on to her children, as well as to a number of young people who experienced the loving ministry of the Word of God to them in youth groups, Sunday school and personal ministries. Bea first attended Northwestern Bible College and then transferred to the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, where in 1960, she earned her bachelor’s degree. She earned her master’s degree in elementary administration from Winona State University in 1969. Bea taught first grade for five years, after which she also became the acting principal prior to serving as full-time principal at Houston Elementary School, where she served for a total of 30 years. She was an active member of numerous educational organizations. The past 15 years, Bea and Norm have spent their winters in Gulf Shores, Ala. She loved the things of God, family, reading, travel, puzzles and people.

Beatrice is survived by her husband, Norman Van Loon; three sons, Kenneth (Sandra) Van Loon of Newton, Iowa, Timothy (Rita) Van Loon of Winona and Ronald (Cindi) Van Loon of La Crescent, Minn.; one daughter, Kimberly Van Loon of Honolulu; six grandchildren, Rebecca, Jonathon (Cheryl), Nathan, Andrew, Benjamin and Angela; two great-grandchildren, Bridget and Amber; one sister, Mary Bymers of Watervaliet, Mich.; and one brother, Robert (Dody) Bymers of Coloma, Mich.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and one sister, Ruth.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 11, at the Hoff Funeral Homes-Houston Chapel.

The memorial service will be held Saturday, April 12, at 11 a.m. at the Bethany Evangelical Free Church in Houston. Burial will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Green Mound Cemetery in Holmen, Wis.

Memorials can be made to the American Cancer Society or Christian Air Ministries.

Donald P. ‘Don’ Sattler

Oct. 21, 1943 — April 7, 2008

Donald P. “Don” Sattler, 64, of Winona died Monday, April 7, 2008, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse, Wis.

Donald Paul was born Oct. 21, 1943, in St. Paul to John and Jeanne (Trepanier) Sattler. He graduated from Shanley High School, Fargo, N.D. In 1964, he married Dorothy Fredrick in West Fargo, N.D. They later divorced, and in 1986, he remarried Kate Przybylski in La Crosse. He received his bachelor’s degree from Winona State University in 1992 and EMT in 1999. He was formerly employed as

an orderly at Community Memorial Hospital, job coach at Winona Occupational Rehabilitation Center and a program assistant at Home and Community Options. Music and art were Don’s passions. He was a professional musician for many years and taught drums and guitar in North Dakota and Minnesota.

Don is survived by his wife, Kate of Winona; five children, Sara and Cindy Sattler of Chaska, Minn., Melissa, Amanda and John Sattler, all of Winona; three grandchildren, Jamie, Dray and Abbey; his father, John of Minneapolis; a brother, Greg of Lisbon, N.D.; a sister, Jeannine (Jim) Dunbar of St. Paul; dearest friend, Carolyn Hill of Wabasha, Minn.; and many dear nieces, nephews and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Jeanne; a sister, Anne Hawkinson; and three brothers, Chuck, Gene and Brad.

Services to remember Don will be at 11 a.m. Friday, April 11, at Faith Assembly of God Church, Winona, with the Rev. Rick Drury officiating. Interment will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Winona.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today, April 10, at Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home, Winona, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Friday at the church.

W. Keith McCallum

Dec. 22, 1915 — April 8, 2008

RUSHFORD, Minn. — W. Keith McCallum, 92, of Rushford died Tuesday, April 8, 2008, at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minn.

Keith was born Dec. 22, 1915, in Amherst Township, near Canton, Minn., to Robert and Maude (Case) McCallum. He graduated from Lanesboro High School and worked on his family farm until 1948. On June 12, 1948, Keith married Marian Markegard at Rushford Lutheran Church in the parsonage. He worked at Miller Chevrolet and Morken’s Ford, both in Rushford, as a mechanic. For 20 years, Keith worked at Delta Import Motors in La Crosse, Wis., as their Mercedes mechanic. He was a member of the Rushford Fire Department for 25 years. Keith enjoyed coin collecting, fishing, going to steam engine shows, nature, animals, limericks, metal detecting, motorcycling and anything mechanical. He will be dearly missed.

Keith is survived by his son, Dennis (Sandee) McCallum of Rochester, Minn.; two granddaughters, Carmen McCallum (Jason Pederson) from St. Michael, Minn., and Amanda McCallum (Jay Patterson) from Seattle; two great-granddaughters, Adalyn and Sophia Pederson; and special friend, Audrey Peterson.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Marian; and two brothers.

The funeral service for Keith will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 12, at Hoff Funeral Home-Rushford Chapel in Rushford, with the Rev. Wade Davick officiating. Burial will follow at Rushford Lutheran Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 11, at Hoff Funeral Home-Rushford Chapel and also one hour prior to the service Saturday at the funeral home.

Virginia P. Capron

Dec. 9, 1919 — April 8, 2008

Virginia P. Capron, 88, of Winona died Tuesday, April 8, 2008, at Saint Anne Extended Healthcare, Winona.

Virginia was born Dec. 9, 1919, in Philadelphia, to William and Lottie (Powell) Dawley. On Dec. 20, 1947, she married John Hugh Capron in Norfolk, Va., and he preceded her in death April 18, 2004. Virginia taught school in her early years and later did substitute teaching in the Winona schools. She was a member of First Congregational Church, Winona; Community Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, Chapter AP of PEO; an avid bridge player; and a member of Winona State University Faculty

Wives from its inception in 1948.

She is survived by her son, John Kenneth (Diana) Capron of Lanesboro, Minn.; and two grandchildren, William Dawley Capron and Charles Banfield Capron.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and a granddaughter, Kathryn Virginia Capron.

Funeral services to remember Virginia will be at 3 p.m., Friday, April 11, at First Congregational Church, Winona, with the Rev. Rick King officiating. Interment will be at Woodlawn Cemetery, Winona.

Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. at the church Friday.

Memorials may be directed to the J. Hugh and Virginia Capron Scholarship at Winona State University.

David A. Steinfeldt

David A. Steinfeldt, 66, of Winona died Wednesday, April 9, 2008, at his home.

Arrangements are pending with the Watkowski-Mulyck Funeral Home.

Steve H. Jacobson

WATERTOWN/BLAIR, Wis. — Steve H. Jacobson, 53, of Watertown and formerly of Blair, died Tuesday, April 8, 2008, at his mother’s home in Holmen, Wis.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Evangelical Lutheran Church, Pigeon Falls, Wis. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Jack Funeral Home, Blair, and one hour prior to the services Saturday at the church.
