A 19-year-old St. Charles man, his 22-year-old brother and a 19-year-old man from Peterson, Minn., were all referred to the Winona County Attorney’s Office for charges of first-degree burglary and misdemeanor assault, Winona Police Deputy Chief Paul Bostrack said. The younger brother could also face charges of obstructing justice and fleeing police. The Peterson man could be charged with obstructing justice and underage drinking.
The men’s names are being withheld until criminal charges are filed.
According to the police report, officers were dispatched to 328 W. Sanborn St. on a report of an assault at 2 a.m. Saturday. The renters there reported several men forced their way inside and assaulted two occupants. Upon the officers’ arrival, the victims and witnesses pointed out two men leaving the residence as the suspects. Officers began pursuing them and immediately apprehended the Peterson man, who confessed to going into the house with the two brothers.
The other man ran into a residence at 366 Grand St. about three blocks away, but police were unable to get anyone to answer the door, according to the report. A judge granted them a search warrant and police found the younger brother inside wearing the same clothes he had on during the chase and with blood on his hands, pants and shirt. He was taken into custody without further incident.
Although the older brother was not taken into custody, based on an interview with investigators over the phone, he was also referred for charges.
The 23-year-old male victims did not need medical treatment.
The younger brother is expected to make an initial appearance in Winona County District Court soon.
