Frank Rocco
Feb. 6, 1939 — March 5, 2008

Frank Rocco, 69, of Winona went home to be with his Lord Wednesday, March 5, 2008, at Community Memorial Hospital.

Frank was born Feb. 6, 1939, in Pittsburgh to Antonio and Anna (Talarico) Rocco. On Dec. 14, 1963, he married Joyce White in Lincoln, Neb. He earned his bachelor of science degree from Clarion University of Pennsylvania, Clarion, Pa.; master’s degree from Boston College, Chestnut Hill, Mass.; Ph.D. from Michigan State University, East Lansing, Mich.; and post doctoral work at the University of Minnesota.

Frank’s employment of his youth included stock boy, hod carrier, paper delivery and lifeguard. His professional employment began with teaching in the field of visual impairment at the Society of St. Vincent De Paul and Sumner High School of

St. Louis. He was superintendent at the Iowa Braille and Sight Saving School, Vinton, Iowa, for three years. Since 1972, he had been a professor at Winona State University in the special education department. In May 2007, he retired as professor emeritus. Visiting professorships were fulfilled at the University of Hawaii, Tianshui Teachers College, Peoples Republic of China and in American Samoa. He was a member of Pleasant Valley Church, Winona, and the Winona Hims. He had been serving on boards with the Dyslexia Institute of Minnesota, Rochester, Minn.; Iowa Braille and Sight Saving School Alumni and Clarion University of Pennsylvania Alumni.

Frank lived his life passionately, especially in loving his family, helping his friends, teaching and mentoring his students, singing and trusting his God.

He is survived by his wife, Joyce; three daughters, Paige (John) Olevich of Chicago, Tegen (Thomas) Kraemer of Stillwater, Minn., and Kristin Neuman of Chanhassen, Minn., six grandchildren, Evan and Theodore Olevich, Jonathan Kraemer, and Asia, Sola and Myka Neuman; a brother, Joseph (Gerry) Rocco of Pittsburgh; a sister, Cecelia Peroni of Pittsburgh; and a sister-in-law, Delores Rocco of Mars, Pa.; and much loved nieces and nephews, and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Dominic and Carmen Rocco; and a brother in infancy, Anthony.

Services to remember Frank will be at 11 a.m., Monday, March 10, at Pleasant Valley Church, Winona, with the Rev. Rick Iglesias officiating. A private interment will be at Woodlawn Cemetery, Winona.

Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home, Winona, and Monday beginning at 10 a.m. at the church.

Memorials may be directed to Winona Hims, Pleasant Valley Church or Clarion University of Pennsylvania.

John ‘Jack’ M. Sagen

Oct. 13, 1927 — March 6, 2008

John “Jack” M. Sagen, 80, died Thursday, March 6, 2008, at his home in Winona. Jack was born Oct. 13, 1927, in Winona to Layton and Violet (McDonald) Sagen. Jack served in the Merchant Marines during World War II. He married Kathryn A. Witt on Nov. 5, 1949, at St. Thomas Pro-Cathedral Catholic Church in Winona. Jack worked for 25 years at St. Mary’s Press. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather who was an athlete in his day as well as an avid sports fan. Jack was a member of Cathedral of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Survivors include his wife, Kathryn; four children, Mary (Wayne) Frahm of Rochester, Minn., Ann Lee of Winona, Kathy Sagen of Winona and John Sagen of Winona; grandchildren, Matt (Tricia) Lee, Jana (Todd) Harrington, Joe (Bobbi) Frahm, Jeff (Marla) Frahm, Jacob Frahm, Lindsey, Shannon and Ashley Sagen; and great-grandchildren, Caitlyn, Riley, Casey, Hannah and Will. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Art; son-in-law, Tom Lee; and daughter-in-law, Lori Sagen.

A Funeral Mass will be offered Monday, March 10, at 11 a.m. at Cathedral of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with the Rev. Richard Colletti officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Winona.

Friends may call at Hoff Funeral and Cremation Service Hansen Goodview Chapel on Sunday from 3 to 7 p.m., where there will be a Christian Prayer Service held at 4 p.m. Friends may also call one hour prior to the service at the church Monday.

Betty McLaughlin

May 26, 1933 — March 6, 2008

Betty Lue McLaughlin, 74, of Mankato, died Thursday, March 6, 2008, at the St. Lucas Care Center, Faribault.

Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, March 10, in Woodlawn Cemetery, Winona, with the Rev. Scott Olson, pastor of Central Lutheran Church, Winona, officiating. Family and friends are welcome to attend an informal gathering at Central Lutheran Church after the graveside service.

Arrangements are being completed by Boldt Funeral Home, Faribault.

Betty Lue, the daughter of Delbert and Myrtle (Deitz) Mortimer, was born May 26, 1933, in Richland County, Wis. She married David McLaughlin in 1954 in Winona, and he preceded her in death in 1983. She was formerly employed by River Hills Mall and McDonald’s, both of Mankato. Betty enjoyed her family and traveling.

She is survived by two sons, Patrick (and Lori) McLaughlin of Faribault and Micheal (and Mary) McLaughlin of Luverne; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one sister, Patricia (and Raymond) Fawcett of Winona.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Dave.

James G. Ahrens Sr.

James G. Ahrens Sr., 75, died Thursday, March 6, 2008, at Community Memorial Hospital.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Hoff Funeral and Cremation Service Hansen Goodview Chapel. Burial will take place in Fort Snelling National Cemetery at a later date.

Visitation will be at the funeral home Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. and one hour prior to the service at the funeral home Tuesday.

William ‘Bill’ Hislop

William R. Hislop, 89, of Lake City died Wednesday, March 5, 2008, at Lake City Nursing Home in Lake City.

Memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at Homer United Methodist Church, Homer, Minn.

Cremation services provided by Mahn Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Lake City. Burial will be at a later date at Hillside Cemetery in Minneapolis.

Jerome ‘Jerry’ Wozney

INDEPENDENCE, Wis. — Jerome “Jerry” Wozney, 78, of Independence died Friday, March 7, 2008, at Grand View Care Center in Blair.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Independence, with burial in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Edison Funeral Home, Independence, where there will be a prayer service followed by a rosary at 7 p.m. Visitation also will be one hour prior to services at the church Wednesday.

Nellie Summers

HOUSTON, Minn. — Nellie Benora Summers, 93, of Houston died Thursday, March 6, 2008, at Valley View Nursing Home in Houston.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Cross of Christ Lutheran Church in Houston.

Visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at Hoff Funeral Homes-Houston Chapel and one hour before the service on Tuesday at the church. Private graveside services for the family.

Arvilla M. Hund

FOUNTAIN CITY, Wis. — Arvilla M. Hund, 84, died Friday, March 7, 2008, at St. Michael Lutheran Home, Fountain City.

Arrangements are pending with Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Fountain City.

Floyd H. Torgeson

Floyd H. Torgeson, 66, died Friday, March 7, 2008, at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minn.

Marjorie C. Lange, 93, died Friday, March 7, 2008, at St. Anne Extended Healthcare, Winona.
