BOCA RATON, Fla. — The Winona State University baseball team started its season season on a high note by hitting its way to a 11-8 victory over Lynn University (Fla.) on Saturday.

WSU (1-0) pounded out 18 hits in the win.
“We just kept hitting the ball,” Warriors coach Kyle Poock said. “When you’re practicing inside for two months, you can’t do a lot. It was a good start for us today.”

WSU took an early 2-0 lead after two innings, but Lynn (8-7) countered with four unanswered runs.

The Warriors responded by scoring nine runs in the last five innings.

Dru Mickelson, Brent Maxwell and Ben Smothers all had three hits for WSU. One of Smothers hits was a home run.

Douglas Toro and Dan Rovetto had two hits apiece for Lynn.

ORLANDO, Fla. — WSU opened up its season by splitting the doubleheader.

“We didn’t play well at all,” Warriors coach Greg Jones said. “We didn’t pitch well, we gave up too many runs and hits and we had too many errors.

“Its frustrating,” he said. “We’ve got a lot we can work on.”
