Published - Sunday, March 02, 2008 College roundup: WSU baseball team records 18 hits in win over Lynn University BOCA RATON, Fla. — The Winona State University baseball team started its season season on a high note by hitting its way to a 11-8 victory over Lynn University (Fla.) on Saturday. WSU (1-0) pounded out 18 hits in the win. “We just kept hitting the ball,” Warriors coach Kyle Poock said. “When you’re practicing inside for two months, you can’t do a lot. It was a good start for us today.” WSU took an early 2-0 lead after two innings, but Lynn (8-7) countered with four unanswered runs. The Warriors responded by scoring nine runs in the last five innings. Dru Mickelson, Brent Maxwell and Ben Smothers all had three hits for WSU. One of Smothers hits was a home run. Douglas Toro and Dan Rovetto had two hits apiece for Lynn. Women’s tennis Saint Mary’s 5, St. Benedict 4 Saint Mary’s 9, Northern State 0 SMU picked up its first win ever against St. Benedict. The Cardinals dominated the singles matches, winning five of six matches. Val Meschke, Kayla Lenz, Aubrey Hirsch, Toni Troumbly and Colleen Radermacher all picked up singles wins. Against Northern State, SMU had no trouble. The Cardinals won all nine matches. Meschke, Lenz, Hirsch, Troumbly, Radermacher and Brittney Nielsen won their singles matches and the doubles teams of Abby Cooper and Sara Clements, Radermacher and Samantha Franklin and Brianna Placek and Hilary Ethen won. Softball Lake Superior State 6, WSU 5 WSU 14, Lake Superior State 13 ORLANDO, Fla. — WSU opened up its season by splitting the doubleheader. “We didn’t play well at all,” Warriors coach Greg Jones said. “We didn’t pitch well, we gave up too many runs and hits and we had too many errors. “Its frustrating,” he said. “We’ve got a lot we can work on.”
