Cochrane-Fountain City teachers, support staff get raises in new contract

.
FOUNTAIN CITY, Wis. — The school board and Cochrane-Fountain City teachers signed a two-year contract agreement that will translate to a 4 percent per-year increase in salaries and fringe benefits.

About 55 teachers in the C-FC Teachers Association are covered in a new union collective bargaining contract for the current school year and 2008-09.
Teacher salaries are figured on a pay schedule that offers increased pay for years of experience and educational achievement.

Total package cost of the 2007-08 contract is $3,677,399, up $141,479 from 2006-07. The average per-teacher increase was listed at $2,661.

C-FC Superintendent Mary Randall said the average teacher salary for the 2007-08 school year was $39,791.

Under the 2007-08 schedule, a teacher with a bachelor’s degree and no additional credits would make from $31,082 to $39,302 with up to 13 years experience.

Teachers with a master’s degree range from $33,871 to $47,320 at 17 years experience. The top pay rates for master’s plus 12 credits run from $34,901 to $49,650 at 17 years.

Listings for teachers with the most seniority for the 2008-09 school year range from $39,573 to $49,993.

The agreement calls for a 189-day annual work contract that includes 10 days of annual sick leave with a provision that allows use of two days a year in half-day increments for personal leave.

The contract includes health, life, dental and long-term disability insurance benefits. The district pays full cost of hospital and dental insurance coverage for family and single plans.

Starting in the 2008-09 school year, the plan includes an employee deductible for prescription drugs ranging from $5 to $25.

The cost of health insurance is now $1,526 per month for a teacher on a family plan; $674 for a single coverage plan. Dental insurance currently is $108 per month for a family plan.

Other sections of the contract agreement cover grievance procedures, working conditions, credit reimbursement for continuing education, retirement and early retirement, co-curricular pay and extra compensation for such things as chaperoning bus trips, summer employment and other added duties.

The district’s 38 support staff union employees received a contract settlement worth increases of 4.05 percent for 2007-08 and 3.98 percent in 2008-09.

The current agreement included salary schedule step increases and 28 cents per hour for hourly support staff and $1.75 per day for bus drivers.

" Bernice, don't forget spending is up at C-FC(and limitted by Wisconsin to) only about 2.5%. The state's formula reduced state aid and increased local property taxes because property values went up (which it uses to figure local citizens's "ability to pay"), but propery taxes went up without any extra money coming to the school over that cost-of-living increase. If you have any ideas on how to make further cut's at C-FC without decimiating our enrollment numbers do not hesitate to pass them on. I don't know what they are. "

" Real estate taxes for Cochrance-Fountain City went up over 13%. The County and Towns held their share to 3.86%. Now the C-FC Board wants even more money. Keep going, the enrollment is down and nobody wants to buy property that is over taxed. "

" Did the substitute teachers also receive an increase in pay?

What do they make now? please respond. tku. "

" Wisconsin laws require a 3.8% raise for teaching staff (and limit revenue increases for the district to about 2.5%, you do the math) but that is salary and benefits combined. So, because of the increase in cost of health insurance C-FC's teachers will likely take a pay *cut* in the second year of the contract to get the 3.8% *total package* increase. "
