Leolah D. Modahl
Oct. 11, 1915 — Feb. 11, 2008
GALESVILLE, Wis. — Leolah D. Modahl, 92, died Monday, Feb. 11, 2008, at Marinuka Manor, Galesville.
She was born Leolah Dorine Smith on Oct. 11, 1915, on the family farm just north of Galesville, the first born of Edward D. and Bertha (Nordstrom) Smith. She married Joseph M. Modahl in Winona on Dec. 27, 1931. He died July 22, 1986.
Leolah told that her mother taught her to read at age 3, enabling her to advance rapidly through her rural grade school and to graduate Galesville High School at age 15. Her plan to continue her education and become a teacher was interrupted by the untimely death of her mother shortly after the birth of her younger sister, Mavis.
Leolah and Joseph raised Mavis from infancy along with their own four children, all of whom survive her; Robert (Beverly Folkedahl) Modahl of Galesville, JoAnn (Richard, deceased) Morrill of Minneapolis, Gerald Modahl of Galesville and Margy (William) Shaffer of Waverly, Iowa. Mavis was always thought of as a sister by all. Leolah is also survived by a brother, Brookes (Dorothy) Smith of Galesville; a brother-in-law, Edward (Mavis, deceased) Anderson of Whitehall; 12 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and numerous nephews and nieces.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Edward “Sonny” and James; and two sisters, Marwood and Mavis.
Later in life, she married Vilas Van Vleet; he died in 1991.
Included in her many activities were Garden Club, league bowling, food pantry volunteer, Presbyterian Church Session and PW, library board and AARP. She was a strong advocate of women’s rights as a member of NOW.
She and Joseph enjoyed many travel vacations around the country and overseas. She resumed her education as her children grew older by completing many night school classes at Winona State College, mostly banking courses relating to her successful 25-year career with the Bank of Galesville.
Funeral services will be held Friday, Feb. 15, at First Presbyterian Church in Galesville. The Rev. Michael Hibbs will officiate. Burial will be at a later date.
