Pet owners, pick up after your pooch

.
In Galesville, Wis., it appears that a baggie is not all that folks have left behind at any area used for the county fair.

In addition to baggies, some residents have left their common courtesy at home and their doggie droppings behind.
It’s getting so bad the organization that owns the fairgrounds is contemplating closing the area to visitors with pets. A few bad dog owners have spoiled what should literally be a pleasant walk in the park for most.

It’s sad when pet owners don’t clean up after their animals. It gives pet owners a bad name.

The Ag Society, the group that owns the land, needs help. Not only do they need for dog owners to step up and act more responsibly, they need the help of those who do use the area properly. It’s time that dog owners who are responsible say something to those they see abusing the privilege. As the Ag Society has said, it’s a hard rule to enforce unless you catch some dog in the act.

Sometimes policing is a community effort. It shouldn’t have to take video cameras or, as a Daily News story reported, DNA samples to figure out which owners are the culprits. Chances are the owners of the dogs know what they’re doing and just loathe the task that no dog owner enjoys.

But having a dog means taking care of it — a basic lesson most of us learned with our first pet.

It’s quite literally crappy when newspapers have to write about dog owners who are unwilling to clean up after themselves.

It should go without saying.

This isn’t just a problem in Galesville, though. It’s a problem in other places, oftentimes on the sidewalks of any city.

Your pet’s mess should not be everyone’s problem.

" Dog owners should clean up after their pets no matter where the dog poop is. I live next to a house where they have two dogs and the yard looks like a barnyard. I'm not looking forward to spring when I will want to open my windows. "

" Didn't I say that I don't drink outside? That would imply that I don't wander. In fact, there are only 2 houses in Winona I have ever drank at. I certainly don't cause any strife and trouble, unless passing out on a friends couch occasionally causes strife or trouble. To be totally honest, I have drank less than 10 times in my life in Winona, and drank enough to get drunk only about half of those times. So no CT, I do not cause strife or trouble, nor do I wander around Winona when drunk. "

" Dodger, I may be drunk on occasion, but I don't ever drink outside in Winona. I drink at the bars, and occasionally at a few different houses. However, unless CT lives very near Bloedow's, or very near McGown gym at WSU, then I've never done anything in his lawn. Come to think of it, I don't think I've ever vomited in anyone else's lawn other than the people who were hosting the party. So unless CT happens to be one of my friends (given my friends, it's entirely possible), then I've never done anything in CT's yard. I have also never pooped on anyone's steps. "

" WOW CT! Just read your other post on the ALC board. I must have really hit a nerve today! Sorry I can't respond to you on the other board CT, that board is for grown ups. Is your homework done? Or are you out on the "patio"? "

CT Rock wrote on Feb 5, 2008 1:35 PM:

" Troller, you may think myself and others are 'trolling' as you say call it, but I'm purely here to help better the community. The sooner you learn that the better you'll sleep at night. "

" But unlike CT, I don't need to climb on top of the manure pile to be higher than the rest. I suppose CT stands for Consummate Turd, but in the end, he's just trolling for a response. Like most bullies, he can dish it out, he just can't take it. Oh well, CT at least your getting a little attention today. "

" I took yesterdays exchange as just plain fun with boys and girls. There are posters with whom I'll always disagree and they with me. But I'd rather have their views on the subject, not me. "Sticks and Stones". I think the board loses some good postings, specifically because, posters don't want to get involved in childish lunacy which is so often demonstrated in posts like CT's and others. Yes, I pick on Lax. But Lax doesn't mind because way back when, Lax stated everything I say is untrue. So If I'm a liar, then my buddy Lax knows I'm just pulling the chain a little. I admit it. I should be more grown up about it. However, this board is like a "king of the hill" (the game not Hank) sport. continued "

" There's no point in insulting Jerome here. Did I touch a nerve with my post about emailing a few friends to stop in and read? I wouldn't think so. I mean, you want attention right? That's why you post your flamboyant and often times off the wall thoughts here isn't it? To get a rise? Trolling, trying snag a few posters who take the board a little too seriously so you can share your "special" brand of fellowship? This is a good venue to share thoughts, opinions and (occasionally) a few facts. Most often, the posts are directed at the writer, not issue. And yes, I'm guilty as the next. But some who post here are doing so for no other reason than to create a little havoc. continued.. "

I just find it pointless to complain about a few piles of dog crap, when all you've got to do is watch where you walk. Try living on a farm once people, every once in a while, you step in something nasty, but guess what--you go on with your life and wipe off your shoe in the grass. Big freakin deal people. "

Besides, we don't often have the opportunity to get expert view point from a dog feces aficionado such as yourself. I hope the bag thing didn't offend you. I was just paying homage to king of the pile. (as it were) Let me know, my friends love to laugh too. "

CT Rock wrote on Feb 5, 2008 9:21 AM:

" Oh what a surprise, 'demo' is here starting a fight with someone instead of contributing. Demo, watch and learn .... CT Rock Contribution Alert! : It's a common deceny to pick up after your dog. One should always carry a paper baggy or accessory to scoop up and insert poop into so as to respect those who may walk behind you at a future time. Getting caught without a bag and letting your dog poop where it wills should be grounds for punishment, even jail-time in my opinion. There is nothing worse than mowing the yard and going over a chunk of poop that wasn't there previously. Having hot chunks of slushy poop bounce back into your face and clothes from the mower is very unfortunate. I'VE HAD IT! "

Jack Sparrow wrote on Feb 5, 2008 1:17 AM:

" Why bother cleaning up after the dog? It's just poop. No one bothers to clean up after the geese and ducks in winona, and as far as poop goes, bird poop is the worst. So you step in it, big deal--scrape it off on a log and rub your feet in the grass, it's not that hard. If this is all people in Galesville have to complain about, I'd say they have it made. "
