St. Charles teen dies in crash; several accidents reported

.
A 17-year-old St. Charles, Minn., girl died in a head-on crash that closed U.S. Highway 14 for more than an hour Monday afternoon.

The driver of the other vehicle, Randy Rusert, 54, of Utica, suffered minor injuries and was treated at Community Memorial Hospital in Winona, said Minnesota State Patrol Lt. Steve Stromback.

The girl’s name was withheld pending notification of her family members.

The accident happened about 1:45 p.m. on Highway 14 about two miles west of Stockton. Stromback said the road conditions were snowy and slushy with a light drizzle in the air. The girl was driving eastbound down a winding hill in a tan-colored sedan. Rusert was going west up the hill in a gray sedan.

After impact, Rusert’s car continued into the north ditch. The girl’s car came to rest on the south shoulder near a guardrail.

The exact cause of the crash is still under investigation, Stromback said.

The highway was closed for more than an hour from The Arches to Stockton while crews cleared the scene and the State Patrol reconstructed the accident.

Hwy 61 Snow-capade

Four cars collided in a slippery dance on a snowy U.S. Highway 61 on Monday afternoon.

The accident happened about 12:45 p.m. halfway between Mankato Avenue and Huff Street. Snow was falling and only about a lane of the highway was clear enough for traffic at the time of the accident.

Cody Allen, one of the drivers involved, said he was traveling southbound at about 40 mph when a black sports utility vehicle traveling north crossed the median and spun in front of him and another driver.

A white Subaru was stuck in the median with heavy front-end damage.

Allen said he hit the brakes and attempted to miss both the spinning SUV and a red Dodge sedan in front of him but couldn’t avoid a collision with the Dodge. His white Buick clipped the vehicle and sent both into the unplowed shoulder of the highway.

Although the driver of the SUV was checked on an ambulance for injuries, authorities reported no injuries in the crash. The cause of the accident was under further investigation.

Lots of crashes/b>

Winona County Dispatch reported at least 18 accidents in the county Monday between about 11 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

Thirteen accidents were reported within the city limits and five occurred in the county at large. Those don’t include accidents in which Winona responders were called to assist other agencies outside their jurisdiction.

Besides the fatal accident on Highway 14, dispatch recorded no injuries in those crashes. Most were the result of fender benders or people sliding into the ditch, dispatch said.

As of 1:30 p.m., the Minnesota Department of Public Safety reported 129 property damage accidents, 30 injury accidents and 112 vehicles in the ditch statewide, said spokesman Nathan Bowie.

When the snow flies, the department recommends drivers slow down, always wear their seat belts, keep extra stopping distance between vehicles and give themselves plenty of extra travel time. In 2006, 18 people died and 1,811 people were injured when road conditions were “snowy, sleet, hail or freezing rain,” according to the Department of Public Safety.

" The 'Sunshine of my life' Britney was a wonderful loving daughter. She always had a smile on her face and I will miss her laying across me on the couch asking for a back massage. She loved going to school in St Charles and drove to school so that she could go to work afterwards. Britney loved her friends to many to mention but they know who they are because it was difficult to keep her home. I love you 'baby girl'! I look forward to the day I will meet you on the otherside! Love Dad "

" Here we go again. Someone got the terrible phone call about their loved one being in an accident. What I wonder is ,is there no school bus from St Charles that would have picked her up in her area? I do not know the area around St Charles where the buses run; but why now a days do all the kids drive cars to school. What is wrong with riding the bus. We did; for over an hr each day; each way. Safer. "

" Where does it say she wasn't wearing a seat belt? "

patches wrote on Feb 5, 2008 5:57 PM:

" I'm not trying to blame any one especially the schools. they have tough decisions when it comes to letting kids go or not. but somtimes they have to look at how many kids drive and when you let all those kids go at once on bad roads, you are going to have problems. Either don't send them to school at all or keep them in school untill the plows can do a better job later in the day like on monday. What really makes this more of a tragdy is she may have had a chance if she would have had a seat belt on. PLEASE STUDENTS, WEAR YOUR SEAT BELT! Again my heart goes out to the family. "

" Our thoughts and prayers are with this family during this very difficult time. I did not know the family, but as we are all human we do feel the sense of loss and sadness. God be with you in this difficult time. "

" My deepest sympathy goes out to the family. They are a very loving family. If only I could stress the importance of seatbelts. I could have easily lost my daughter if she had not been wearing her seatbelt the day of her accident. It was a tragic accident. Pray for this family. GOD must have needed a special angel!!!! Her grandparents and uncle will be meeting at heavens gate. "

" thanks KM777 for those words. As a parent of another senior at St Charles, I know how much all of these kids care about each other. The blame game has no place here. My prayers go out to Brittany's family and friends "

" She was an amazing girl, whom everyone loved. She touched the lives of many, and will never be forgotten. What happened was a tragic accident, but we can't look for someone to point the finger at. It was an accident. I feel bad for people who always look for someone to blame. St. Charles wasn't the only school to close, and the weather isn't always that predictable. It could have been worse at the 4, who could really know at noon. I know I'm not going to be the one pointing the finger and I know she wouldn't either. R.I.P. love!!! "

" Yes, this is very sad, but don't blame the school for this, it was an accident. "

" Sad thing about this accident is if St charles would have kept there kids in school, she would not have been out on the roads at that time. The roads were the worst during that time frame. After about 4:00 or so the conditions improved quite a bit.A very sad story, my heart goes out to her family. "

" A very sad thing to happen to a young lady with her life in front of her. Now, perhaps, those who consistently criticize the schools for closing might understand why it is done. Young lives are at stake and we have to look out for their well-being. Prayers and love to her family. "
