WABASHA, Minn. — Ted H. Stearns, 57, of Wabasha died Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2008, at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center in Wabasha with his loving family at his side after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born Feb. 22, 1950, in Arcadia, Wis., the son of Wayne and Elaine (Huntley) Stearns. The family moved to Winona when he was young. He graduated from Winona High School and then enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving from 1967 until receiving an honorable discharge in 1979 because of medical reasons. While in the service, Ted served in Vietnam and later when stationed in Fairbanks, Alaska, he attended college for two years. He married Petra Williams on Oct. 16, 1980, in Winona.
Ted began employment with the city of Wabasha on Oct. 15, 1990, as a member of the street and park departments. He became public works director for the city Dec. 16, 1998. He retired Oct. 1, 2005, because of failing health.
He enjoyed camping with his family and friends, stock car racing, hunting, fishing and cooking. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family and many friends.
Ted is survived by his wife, Petra Stearns of Wabasha; daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and Mark Teske of Spring Valley, Minn.; son, David Stearns of Wabasha; two stepgrandchildren, Michael and Kaitlynn Teske; mother, Elaine Stearns of Winona; brothers and sisters-in-law, Terry Stearns and friend, Therese Barrett of Dresbach, Minn., Jon and Georgia Stearns of Minnesota City, Minn., Steven Stearns of Winona, Ricky Stearns of Stewartville, Minn., and Randy and Dorothy Stearns of Stewartville; sister and brother-in-law, Rebecca and Scott Pelowski of Winona; nieces; nephews; and cousins. One son, Wayne Charles Stearns, and his father, preceded him in death.
Friends may call at the Abbott Funeral Home in Wabasha on Monday from 4 to 7:30 p.m. when a prayer and remembrance service will be held. Officiating will be the Rev. Dan Johnson, pastor of Mayo Hospice. After the service, the body will be cremated.
Honorary bearers will be Terry, Jon, Steven, Ricky and Randy Stearns, Scott Pelowski, Mike Thill and Jerry Benish.

Gary Peter Schutz

CALEDONIA, Minn. — Gary Peter Schutz, 60, of Caledonia died Thursday, Jan. 31, 2008, of injuries sustained in a logging accident in Spring Grove township, Minn. He was born April 5, 1947, in Caledonia, to Arnold and Philamanie “Butch” (Rouster) Schutz. He married Dorothy Burmaster on April 25, 1987, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Caledonia.
Gary was a self-employed logger in the area for a majority of his life He was an avid outdoorsman, and he liked fishing, hunting and trapping. He also enjoyed coaching youth soccer, especially his team “The Dirty Birds.”
Gary is survived by his wife, Dorothy; his mother, Philamanie “Butch” Schutz, both of Caledonia; a son, Peter (Grace) Engen of La Crosse, two daughters, Katie and Sarah Schutz, both of Caledonia; his grandchildren, Athen, Ivy and Maya of La Crosse; a brother, Paul (Sonja) Schutz of San Antonio, Texas, two sisters, Janet (Bob) Schutz of Kiawah Island, S.C., and Mary (Larry) Besse of Caledonia; and many brothers and sisters-in-law and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m., Monday, Feb. 4, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Caledonia. Father Gregory Leif will officiate, and burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Caledonia.
Friends may call from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Holy Family Hall, behind St. Mary’s Church, 513 S. Pine St., Caledonia, where a prayer service will be at 5 p.m. Friends also may call one hour prior to the service at the church Monday.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the donor’s choice.

MINNESOTA CITY, Minn. — Jule Mastenbrook, 78, of Minnesota City, died Thursday, Jan. 31, 2008, at his home.
Jule was born May 7, 1929, in Winona County to Carl and Kate (Kohl) Mastenbook. He graduated from Winona Senior High and worked construction before being drafted into the U.S. Army in 1954. After being discharged in 1956, Jule continued working construction and later worked at the Mississippi Welder’s Supply in Goodview. He worked there for 22 years until retiring in 1993. On Sept. 19, 1975, Jule married Marianne Sobeck at St. Casmir’s Catholic Church in Winona. Jule was the supervisor for the Rollingstone Town Board for 18 years. He enjoyed coon and deer hunting. He will be dearly missed.
Survivors include his wife Marianne of Minnesota City; son, Tim (Lori) O’Brien of Minnesota City; two granddaughters, Kateeri and Mara O’Brien; brother, Leonard Mastenbrook of Minnesota City; sister, Mary Jacob of Arlington, Texas; and several nieces and nephews. Jule was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Carl Jr. and William Mastenbrook.
The funeral service for Jule will be Monday, Feb. 4, at 11 a.m. at Hoff Funeral and Cremation Services-Hansen Goodview Chapel in Goodview, Minn., with funeral celebrant John Wagenaar officiating. Friends may call from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home and also one hour prior to the service on Monday. Spring Interment will take place at Oakland Cemetery in Minnesota City. Military honors will be provided by the American Legion of Winona after the service at the funeral home Monday.
A reception will immediately follow the services at the funeral home Monday.

Teresa A. Knutson

RUSHFORD, Minn. — Teresa A. Knutson, 40, of Rushford died Thursday, Jan. 31, 2008, at her home due to a recently diagnosed heart condition.
Teresa Ann Benson was born Dec. 7, 1967, in Winona. She was raised in Rushford and graduated from Rushford High School in 1986. Teresa is a graduate of Winona State University. On April 29, 1989, she married Roger Knutson in Rushford. Teresa worked as a human resource manager at 3M for 14 years. During her time at 3M, she lived in Hastings, New Ulm, and Hutchinson, Minn., and Osceola and Bloomer, Wis. In 2004, Teresa moved to Rushford when she became a human resource manager at Composite Products Inc. in Winona. She enjoyed golfing, scrapbooking, and most of all, spending time with her boys.
Teresa is survived by her husband, Roger; two sons, Nick and Cole Knutson, both at home; mother, Sheila Cheeks of Winona; maternal grandmother, LaVaughn Blagsvedt of Rushford; a brother, James Cheeks of Winona; mother and father-in-law, Stan and Ruth Knutson of Caledonia; brother-in-law, Brian (Brenda) Knutson of Lewiston; two sisters-in-law, Lorna (Ray) Calvert of Brunswick, Ga., and Joan Dugstad of Rochester; four nephews; two nieces; and one great-niece.
The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 4, at Rushford Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Roger Michaelson officiating. Burial will be in the Rushford Lutheran Cemetery.
Friends may call from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Hoff Funeral Homes-Rushford Chapel and one hour prior to the service Monday at the church.

ARCADIA, Wis. — Florence M. Klink, 91, of Arcadia died Thursday, Jan. 31, 2008, at Franciscan Skemp Healthcare Medical Center in Arcadia.
Services will be at noon Monday at Holy Family Parish. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Arcadia.
